Car finishes are one of the most controversial subjects around and I have always found most of the debates pretty funny.
Let's start with the "thin cheap paint" on the car. There are statements that people claim to have rubbed it off wit a rag or hit a bug and chipped it. I cry bullshit. It is no thinner than car paint has ever been and if you can rub it off then I would love to see a demonstration. Yes it chips easier than your 1992 Honda but it has nothing to do with being thin or cheap. The modern methods required by international law result in a much harder surface and this is why it chips so easily not because it is thin. All those fancy soaps and wash products are another story. They really are just soap with some big claims attached. Much like that special ummagiddin ( don't look it up I made the word for effect) extract used in shampoo to make your hair vibrant and full bodied it is all marketing hype with no real advantage. Read the data sheets and you will see that in the end it is just soap. I have no idea how many times I have read here to not use dish soap, car washes, or any other product that wasn't delivered by angels in buckets of gold because it will harm the paint. Again I call bullshit. Short of using abrasive cleaners or washing your car in brake fluid there will be no damage done to your clear coat much less the paint itself. The sun and the contaminates in the rain are 1000 times more harmful than any detergent or soap you can pour on there. This advert fear of using anything but Mrs Magioo's Magical Mystery Mixture to wash the car is founded upon decades of sales pitches that have convinced people that a car finish is somehow delicate as flower petals. They are not. The finish is a tough coating designed to last for years even with minimal up keep. I know everybody wants to keep their car looking nice forever but eventualy driving it, weather and the sun are going to take their toll no matter what you use anyway.

I use Mrs Magioo's Magical Mystery Mixture #7 so HA!! But I understand your point, but just after using dish soap for years on another car it just turned a haze. I had to compound off the haze and started using car wash soap. Never had an issue with haze again. Maybe dish soap has something in it not meant for clear coat. I'm going with experience with both and just seems the car wash soap cleans without harming the clear. Not a theory I want to test on my 11 month old car just to save a few bucks. The car wash soap is cheaper too.

![]() I am not advocating using a dish soap EVERY TIME one washes a car. Just when you want take all the old wax off so you can get down to and start a new polishing/waxing directly on the clear coat. Yes, I agree, for regular washing of a car, I do believe it's best to use an automotive product that will not take off the wax. Hell, it's not like we were going out there and washing a car out of a wooden bucket, with a large chunk of lye soap and a stiff, horse hair brush..... ![]() OK, who's up next ........ ![]() humfrz |

I should clarify that I also use actual automotive wash products. My prior rant was intended to point out that the paint is not a water colour that is going to dissolve if you use other products not to say that Palmolve should be the soap of choice. Oh and your soaking in it! (Old guy reference).
