What would you do with the extra horsepower?

And almost no one has an answer, which leads me to believe they don't know. They just want more.

But to answer, so I feel better about myself- is sad. How would you feel if Toyota lied, and you found out that the car has 183 hp? Would you like yourself less?
I would have fun with it

I think it's already been explained what people would do with the extra horsepower - ACCELERATE FASTER. It's been answered, but you ignored/discounted it. if you have to ask 'why would people want to do that?'; you have a very limited view/perspective on why people enjoy driving.

who's answered 'to feel better about myself' in this thread?

i don't really care what the horsepower numbers are; i just know whether it accelerates fast enough for me or not.

here's another question - are you interested in adding more power? if not, why bother asking the question?

is it a 'reverse-elitist' thing you're trying to prove to justify keeping your car stock? there are those who add power to say 'i'm better than you because i have more power', and there are those that say 'i'm better than you because i don't NEED more power, and the only reason you're adding power is to say that you're better than other people, so you're an asshat'. Well, both types are asshats IMHO.

if i found out toyota lied about HP numbers, i wouldn't like myself less. i'd like toyota less and lose faith in them.

the problem you have not understanding why some people complain the car is underpowered is because you're ignoring the difference between the words 'need' and 'want'.

if the 2017 twin had two models; 200 hp and 250 hp, both exactly the same price and all other things equal, which one would you choose?

This is simply a question that no one else can answer for you. For some people speed itself is an addiction and horsepower is a means to an end.

I have no idea why I find it fun to ski at 60+ mph when most others are casually poking down the hill. But I do.

he'd have +50 HP more fun than you do now, unless you don't have fun driving your car at the moment.

take your car as it is right now. do you have fun with it? take away 50 HP from it. would it be exactly the same amount of fun to drive? how about 100 HP less? if you can answer honestly and don't think it'd be as fun to drive with 50 less HP, you then have your answer why people would add some.

I do have fun now. But being pushed harder into my seat under acceleration or whatnot would be even more enjoyable. Plus the prices of making the car "better"makes me happy

Because the quest and enjoyment of speed/acceleration is fundamentally human, whether it's lateral (like a rollercoaster) or in a straight line. it's a thrill, and if someone says that they don't understand it, they're either dumb or playing dumb.

Yes, I understand the idea of addiction to speed. It's exhilarating. I've never skied, but I imagine there are no speed limits on the slopes. Go as fast as you want.

And since no one mentioned it, let's forget about racing the twins.

I had a factory supercharged Miata, and loved how relatively fast it was off the line. But a few days of (somewhat) racing to the next light, and accelerating on the on ramp, and I wondered what the big deal is. What else could I do with it?

There's lots of open space out west, and very few cops, so for those with high HP cars, I get taking chances there. But for the rest of us in crowded areas, either we have a bucket full of speeding tickets, or we're just goosing it off the line when the light changes, and flooring it on the on ramps, and nothing else. Other than bragging how much horsepower the car has.

It would be like bragging about having fast skis (I imagine some are faster than others), but poking down the slopes.

So I guess a better question is- where do you display the speed?

So that's the answer, accelerate faster? Stoplights and on ramps?

You did.

Wow, that's a leap. I bought the car used. It had a bunch of mods. I like them all.

Who did I call an asshat, or even imply was one?

yes, the answer is accelerate faster - anywhere the owner chooses to.

nope, i did not answer that i added HP to feel better about myself. i was responding to your comment that doing that would be 'sad'.

you didn't call anyone an asshat - i defined two types to see whether you identified with either.

ok, so you ran out of places to display your speed and you got bored with it after a week.

for others, it's not a display of speed, because 'display' implies that there are other people you're showing off to. not everyone is a show-off. as for bragging, adding on 50 or 100 HP to a car that starts out with 200 isn't much to brag about IMHO.

i just realized you're in HI and may not have the opportunity to enjoy driving - whether it's during an everyday commute or for pleasure.

so, in answer to your question 'where do you display your speed?', my answer is 'I don't'. i didn't add HP to show off or race anyone (since there's always someone faster or with nicer cars. i'm surrounded by faster and nicer cars in my area).

i use it when there are as few people around as i can, and if the time and place affords it. my enjoyment of added HP is a personal enjoyment, like eating a good meal alone.

+1 I don't use mine to show off. The feeling if accelerating faster on the on ramp/stop light and satisfaction if improving the car is my only motivation

This is quintessential America- if it's big, it's not big enough, if it's fast, it's not fast enough- because America. And, because no other reason.

But for those who want more HP, if your FR-S had a significant bump in HP, how would you use it? And, -to feel better about yourself- is a legitimate answer. Sad, but legitimate.
i'd finally race and beat that hot soccer mom in my neighborhood with her v6 odyssey.

Hahaha, we have a winner! Oh, wait. You'd beat the odyssey, but not the caravan?

More Horsepower!
