Cats change the sound quite a bit in my experience on a lot of different cars. For example, adding a cat made my GTI a lot less raspy and quieter outside the car but now it drones like crazy inside the car. Removing cats on my VR-4 just made it louder with no drone.

Lots of variables and it can get expensive quickly chasing your tail. If you can find a video online with a quality recording of the sound you're looking for, go for that setup.

Also I would like to chime in, mav1178 tested out the Fujitsubo Catless dual resonated front pipe and it is the quietest front pipe on the market today. In fact, in all his tests, it has kept the noise levels the same (fujitsubo vs stock front pipe) on different exhaust setups.

"The 84db @ 4500RPM is from the manufacturer and most likely w/ stock exhaust. In other words, compared with stock it doesn't change the sound at all.

The Berk front pipe on a stock muffler raised the sound by 3db, for your reference."

Keep in mind his Berk front pipe is catted.
Fujitsubo catless.

Also one of the tests he did.

Threw on the Tomei 60R (one of the loudest exhausts for our cars)...

Stock + Tomei 60R -- 107.1db

Fujitsubo Front pipe + Tomei 60R -- 107db

That's what I was getting at... it's not so much a catalytic converter is there, but rather the question of if that cat is of enough volume to act as an effective resonator.

Sound on straight-thru exhaust piping is suppressed by volume. OE setups use baffles, hence the loss of power.

Whether you have a catalytic converter or not is not as important for sound as size and total volume of resonators.

Read my original post. I have the full setup already and it IS too loud on a cold start. Otherwise I love it.

Is the problem only the cold start then? You could always adjust the cold start RPMs to something more tolerable. I wouldn't say that getting the jdl front pipe vs the stock one changed much. Just more refined and in some aspects increased tone/volume. I feel like the front pipe did tone down the droning sound on cold starts.

The stock front pipe is much quieter (and a more restrictive cat) than the Berk catted front pipe, which is why it was quieter.

I run a variation of that JDL Ultra Quiet Front pipe on my build, I have the one with the over pipe integrated into it. But in all honestly it will make your exhaust louder if you upgrade from the restrictive stock front pipe to the JDL unit. I think you will only notice it to be quieter if you have already previously had a un-catted front pipe and upgraded to the JDL unit.

I personally love mine, it provides the most sway bar clearance on the market the same can't be said for the unit in question that you mentioned (Non-Over pipe integrated unit) & that sound off a full turbo back 3" JDL exhaust system paired with a Tomei Type 80 is amazing.

I have plenty of swaybar clearance too (the rub marks are from installation, and yes, it's rusty, they salt the ever-loving crap out of the roads here and depending on the grade of stainless it can get surface rust though I'm disappointed the ceramic coat didn't protect it a bit better)
