Disclaimer: Completely guessing here.

It's probably because TC on FWD cars, like the Civic, is easier to implement. The frequent case is that they understeer, so they just simply lift off the throttle a bit and all is good again. In the case of a RWD car, keeping it balanced during an oversteered turn is quite difficult. If you lift off the throttle too much, you get snap understeer or if you hit it again a bit too hard it oversteers more and spins the car out. You don't countersteer in an acceptable angle and you go into a tree. All these factors are probably why the engineers of the TC just said make it brake aggressively, and completely cut off the throttle, and let the computers take over to ensure traction is regained so no one dies.

Well yes, but that's stupid thinking. Just because the TC issue doesn't go away doesn't mean that fixing the cause of TC activating isn't a solution. If you get good tires and take a turn at the same speed and TC doesn't kick in, then you get the level of fun at the speed you wanted on the stock tires without TC ruining your fun.

If you just HAVE to push the limits of whatever tire you have on so that TC kicks in on public roads and want TC still on to save your arse, then I don't have much to say besides that you're an idiot.

Part of my ritual when getting in the car is pressing the right most nanny button; this allows a little slip before tc kicks in. I find this to be an acceptable compromise for street driving.

I can think of plenty of people that need harsh traction control. And no way to fully disable it. Even though they want to.

No, those people need NO traction control so they can hurry up and crash and take themselves out of the equation, or learn how to drive.

Exactly the fact it doesn't show a light while its running in background (until it kicks in of course) and that non car people don't know it's their unless they turn it off weeds out the bad drivers. Those people that don't know you can turn it off in the first place don't need it off.

It's not because the ABS system is easier to implement on the FWD cars. From what the OP described with the FWD cars he drove, all of them probably had better stock tires than the twins, and that he probably didn't drive those cars hard enough with ESP kick in to experience the same behavior he's having with the BRZ.

The best solution imo should be to upgrade the tires and keep the nanny on when driving on the streets, and just adapt your driving style to the car setup and driving condition.

When you say leave it all turned on, does that mean not touching any of the buttons and having none of the indicators show up on my screen?

Yes. I only turn it off to play. The rest of my street driving is done as a normal civilised person and that means it never interferes unless things are going horribly wrong.

Does anybody else find the traction control to be too harsh?

If you feel TC kicking in harsh then you are driving it wrong? I don't find it feeling all weird unless when it's braking the front wheel for me......😑

Also what tire/wheel are you on? All stock? Basically you were just jumping the car out of the said tire's limit too sudden. You need to change ur driving habit, I think you have a really wrong approach on how turn/throttle should be applied on a RWD car. It's harsh cuz your tail is "going" out.

Just saying this cuz I can slide a tiny bit when I had stock... & traction won't even come on. Another thing for you to know is that your TC will become less harsh when they kick in as your car age. "Atleast that's how I feel with mine"😄 Hope I helped you.

Truth be told, I need NCP training more than anything else.

Wow, I'm surprised to read all the observations about over-sensitive TC and VSC. Now, I consider myself neither one of Tcoat's normal civilized drivers nor a wild man who can't stand it unless he's driving sideways. Somewhere in between, winding it out suddenly on entry ramps, and downshifting and flooring it through a small gap in the traffic, etc., is more my cup of tea. And after four months together, we are mechanically still stock everything.

I have never turned the electronic controls off, and I have never felt them trying to overrule my driving input, except for maybe a little wheel lift during a sharp turn leaving a stop sign. All in all very subtle and unobtrusive.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to let the dealer look at it. It sounds kind of dangerous.

I do feel the same about the TC. It can be a little much esp for the fact that it's really not that much power to b had in the first place for such a harsh control. So! This is why I turn both off lol. First hit sport mode then hit TC n you will have no issues 👍😁

If your TC is engaging in dry conditions on public roads, you're driving it wrong. The TC won't engage unless you're asking the car to do something it doesn't want to do.

I found VSC Sport to be excessively intrusive on the track. During heavy braking, if my wheel was turned even a little bit, I would feel the ABS pinging here and there trying to "save" me. Full trac-off on the track felt much better. But again, that's on the track.
