2017 model year just started rolling out over the last 2-3 months, just in time for winter when many people stop looking for sporty, rear wheel drive cars. I'm sure the rollout will be slow, but I test drove one mid-October at my local Toyota dealer in CT, and I'm pretty sure it was probably the first one in the state. Had all of 2.5 miles on it when I turned the key if I remember right. And of course there was one at our local auto show where the dealers show off all the new wares. I hate to say I was actually more interested in the Chevy Cruze hatch than I was in the 86. If the 86 still wore the Scion face, I'd have probably gone for it, and I thought that's what they'd do to carry over whatever they had left in their Scion queue. The new front end just doesn't do it well for me at all. Grounded to the ground or not (please stop that crap, Toyota) it's just not very good looking. I love function more than form 95% of the time, but even I can't get behind that face.

I'm sure they'll start littering the west coast soon, and as soon as spring hits all the seasonaly snowy parts of the country will start picking them up.

They really need to watch it, though. If these cars start creeping into the $30k price range, they're going to do themselves in with one sports car before they can drop the Supra and start being Old Toyota again.

.29 drag coefficient? I thought the FR-S was .27...? Guess all that facial sculpting is to blame. I would also love to see that fender trim's higher efficiency proven in a wind tunnel, otherwise I can't see that one raised piece of plastic in the center of it making such a major difference in the car's aerodynamics when whatever air it's supposed to be helping is just going blast right up into the back of our really chunky side mirrors.

Sure sounds super cool the way they wrote it in the sales pitch, though.

Aero is weird, wild stuff. Most of their equations can't even be solved without assuming 3/4 of the equation is negligible or using iterative math tools like MatLab. Sometimes you create turbulence at one area to improve the overall airflow. A spinning vertical cylinder can effectively act as a sail. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotor_ship?wprov=sfsi1
It is totally possible that those little bits make some difference.

<--- not a practicing aerospace engineer, but I have a pretty piece of paper that says that I could be. Practice as an ME.

We have similar professions and pieces of paper. I get what you're saying. I'd still love to have them prove to me that a more than negligible difference is had from replacing a fender insert with a little badge on it with one that apparently downforces the hell out of your car (as written)....even though they added a badge to the lower part of the fender that was once clean.

Shenanigans, I say. Shenanigans!!

They mentioned previously that the new front end adds down force over the original. That will be where the vast majority of the increased drag coefficient is coming from. As for the fender "vents", maybe they create turbulence in front of the mirror making them drag less? That's about all I got there

Remember that this crap is all in the name of syling "aggressiveness", telling us it is aero justifies the stupidity.

Just so I understand, an FR-S front bumper will fit the 2017 Toyota 86, correct? If so, I know what I'm doing this spring.

The only issue comes with the parking lights, right?

And trying to prevent bumper sag.

Not going for that ultra expensive CB style one after all?

But it must be aero. Why else do this to the Prius?

The link you guys provided to the one that looks similar is just a bit odd, and I suspect the Cb (if found) will be lots of money. I don't hate it that badly.

I figure I have three option. Leave it alone, an FR-S or BRZ front, or try my hand at mangling and bondo-ing the stock front.

Added: You KNOW that oozing herpes on the front of the Prius is going to trickle down to the 86.

Well the whole line up is headed in the same direction.

I don't know who to be annoyed with. The people who design this crap, or the clowns it is designed for. It's "Marching Morons" design level.

It's"market research" probably used the same polling companies that said Trump had a <2% chance of winning
