Yes I know I don't expect anything else from Toyota on this car until Tokyo.

But we have not seen any concept from Subaru except the drivetrian. LA would be a little late to show their version of the car because if it is negatively received there would not be a lot of time to restyle it before Tokyo the next month.

Subie has a history at NYIAS and it would allow them time to make subtle tweaks to the design if it got bad reviews.

Of course the Subie version could be almost exactly the same as the FT-86II from toyota save for different grille and rear tailights and that is why we haven't seen the subie version. No need to show a concept if it is a badge clone

It's not just a random rumor. There was another quote from 2009 from Toyota VP Bob Carter:

Quote:
The reality of it is, there are pluses and minuses for both [Scion or Toyota]. It’s an exciting car, but when you get into sports cars and compare them with Corollas, Camrys and RAV4s, the volumes just aren’t there. So it becomes a debate, where can you best market low-volume? Is it better to market that as a Toyota product or a Scion product? And it could go either way.

But the latest info from the dealer meeting came from Wallstreet journal in Oct 2010. You need to subscribe to read the full story, but the link is here:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...102318986.html

Quote:
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Dow Jones)--Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday challenged U.S. dealers to boost annual sales in the U.S. to two million vehicles by 2013, an increase of 30% over its current level, according to two people briefed by the company.
<snip>
Toyota executives also told dealers they were committed to reviving the struggling, youth-oriented Scion brand and were bringing a slate of new products, the people said.

The new Scion models include a production version of its FT-86 concept car as well as the already-announced Scion iQ subcompact, the people said.
Given that Wallstreet Journal is pretty reputable, the story seems legit. Of course, maybe (hopefully?) Toyota changed its mind from October '10, but seems like it's leaning towards being a Scion at this point.

The waiting and uncertainty sucks...this car needs to be a Toyota and Scion needs to be let to die out.
