Fold the back seats down and you have a TON of space.

My only real complaint (?) is that some stuff doesn't fit super easily through the openings (trunk or behind passenger seat with it folded and pushed up as far as it can go). But it totally can work. Just takes some patience and maybe a few trips.

There are many, many, MANY, renovation projects or things to be hauled where these cars just plain can't do it. The only thing worse would be a Miata (it is not always the answer) and to think otherwise is just silly.
That said, unless you are in the business of hauling lumber, drywall, loads to the dump, firewood, etc. etc. etc. Then there are several options available that in the long run are probably cheaper and easier than trading in the car for something bigger. Building supply stores usually deliver for a reasonable price. If you have a big project you can do a bit of planning and rent a truck. There could be friends or family or even small companies that will do deliveries or haul junk away.
By the time you trade/sell your car, pay for something bigger (it has to be a lot bigger to make a difference and then take the hit on your daily driving fuel costs you could have paid for a pile of deliveries!
I use the company truck about 20 times a year for things that it would be foolish to even attempt in the 86 but I would not want to pay the operating costs that it would rack up if a year round DD.

The truck, I just throw things in the bed and they fit without much thought about scratching interior pieces. The brz's got marks all on the dash and drive shaft hump plastics from all of it, specifically, lawn chairs that won't fit in the trunk, but barely fit in the back seat with about 15 minutes of work manipulating both seats and seat belts

Even if the guy doesn't have any friends to borrow a truck, places like Home Depot will even rent you one, or a cargo van. 19 bucks for the first 75 minutes or 130 for a full day. Pretty reasonable to me.

Here’s a thing, house project is a temporary... unless it’s like my local road construction (that shit have been going for several decades lol). If he want to become carpenter or some kind of job that require moving a shit ton of stuff, trading to truck makes more sense than owning the twin.

& like you said, most of those places ship the stuff. That’s how I got my baseboards & few other big stuff.

But hey~ he’s a big kid, he can do whatever he want.

It should very good. Most of the leaf lookers and all the trailer & RV folks should be gone. It's best to do middle of the week as lots of bikers and car people will still show up on the week ends. Weather can be iffy but the wife and have been there late in September early October and have had a blast.
Although we tend to stay/ride a little farther south. This has been our road map since 1999.
