Partly I'm out of practice. I haven't practiced the type of coding problem he was asking me to do since I interviewed for the current job.

I had figured when they said coding questions for this internal transfer opportunity, it'd be more like discussing code I've written here for my current team or work on a relevant problem for this new team. Also, in general when it comes to these types of interviews I've just always felt fairly insecure and unskilled because they're usually styled at one type of vague, very unrelated problem solving on the spot, which I'm not good at. Rather than the kind of problem solving that is actually relevant to the job itself.

The last time I interviewed when I got my current job back in Dec. 2019, it was a full day on-site with 4 one hour segments, each with a different person. Did fine with 3/4 of them, panicked on one.

I'm mostly out of practice, which makes the fear/anxiety problem worse. And it's difficult to spend time outside of work practicing because we're in crunch mode on some projects.

Most people you ask would say the typical software engineer interviewing process is incredibly awful, but there's not really a better way either.

The sad thing about this scenario is just that since I already went through that process, I was hoping/expecting that with this being internal, my earlier interviews would have counted and these would be more relevant to the role itself, which they clearly are not.

Great list of names. I'd maybe add Sophia on there. I personally don't love Fiona/Vanessa but if you're happy with them that's all that matters!

wait until you see her. my brother and his wife did. they're confident in the name they chose. they individually had narrowed down their name lists to about 5 names per gender, but it's still a lot to choose from!

Well, spike021, that's a shame you felt your interview went poorly.

I know nothing about software engineering, however, I have interviewed for several positions during my working days in the scientific field. Most of the executives that I have interviewed with and were hired by, held a PhD degree and most of my prospective counterparts had PhDs. I had a BBS degree (Barely a Bachelor of Science - ), so, I had to try to avoid direct scientific questions.

For example, in your case with the "typical challenge problem", I might have admitted that I was a bit rusty with that particular type of problem and would need to do a bit of research and/or brushing up to solve the problem. "HOWEVER, in the past I have successfully solved similar problems".

"FOR EXAMPLE, when I was project manager of _______, a problem arose that involved ___________. I proceeded to _____ and ______. After consulting with _____ and _____ I laid out a plan that was accepted and was successful in meeting the objective, on time, within budget. AND THEN when I was _____, my team was given the task of __________, again, I _________ by _________."

Just keep on going till the interviewer has had enough .........

This strategy may or may not work for you, in your field.

Wish it were that easy .

In these kind of interviews they don't want you to say it requires some research, even if it's just a matter of rust.

It's basically like doing a decently tough Calculus/Linear Algebra/whatever problem, closed-book/notes/etc. You need to be able to perform on the spot. Generally they'll say something like "it's ok, we can walk through it together." But the results of that vary. Sometimes the interviewer means that and will gladly help you and that help doesn't negatively affect how they report the interview went. Sometimes depending on the interviewer, they'll be more like "I had to help this guy on this part or that part, which I think are too easy so they shouldn't have had issues with it" and it will reflect negatively.

You can't really BS it, either.

That's what we did with all three of ours. Well, the first two we didn't find the sex out in advance, MomHawk wanted to find out at birth, so that made not picking out a name in advance easier. The third we did find out in advance.

In all cases, we had a few names picked out, and even with that, only used 1 of the selected names after the birth.

Back to the discussion about the Durango Hellcat, looks like GM may be getting into the SUV HP wars with a supercharger for its big SUVs (Escalade, Tahoe, Suburban).

Oddly enough, its likely to be a dealer add-on! It won't top the Durango but 620HP or so is nothing to sneeze at. I think with the suspension changes they've made to the big SUVs it would be an interesting (but still very dangerous) driver.
