I can handle the interior, but exterior painting is way above my skill and equipment set. Just got the first quote from a shop w/ great rep, and it was $13,500...which is probably a bit more than half of the total worth of the plane. Any advice? Places in the NE that do good work but might be less expensive? Thoughts in general? Plane flies great, low time engine, IFR (but very dated avionics, no GPS or soon-to-be-mandated ads-B out). I fly in C airspace regularly, so ads-B comes first., then interior, but I can get all of that done for well under $10k. Not much left over for paint job. She sure looks awful..sigh.. but it's hard for me to justify long green on cosmetics.
All repair and maintenance on a plane costs a significant percentage of the actual value of said plane. Didn't you know?

That must be a fill strip down, which is a big cost, but the price doesn't surprise me. I would say check with some additional shops and see if you can find one that will give you a reduced price if you let them fit into a hole in their schedule or maybe if you help with some of the disassembly.
@Tcoat I also know someone that had his experimental painted at a buddy's Maaco shop. Actually one of the nicest paint jobs I've seen on a plane. Can't do that with a non-experimental though.

Also, look to see if there is a school near you (or within flying distance) that does aviation training and would be willing to take it on as a project. I know a guy that got his painted that way, and it turned out fine.

On the flip side, at least according to VREF (the airplane Blue Book for those not familiar) A new paint job on your plane adds about $4,000 to it's value. Not much ROI, but its something.

How often do you have to paint a plane? I know nothing about it, but my guess would be, if the expensive shop has a "great rep" with plane guys, it is probably worth it. My guess is plane owners are just as picky as car enthusiasts, but I could be wrong.

For aluminum planes, you never technically have to paint them, you can strip them down to the metal and fly 'em naked with a nice coat of wax on them, but it's a lot of maintenance. See example below for a smaller one but there are plenty examples, all the way up to full size passenger planes like the Connie below, that look like that.

Then a lot of other factors go in, is it parked on the ramp, or is it parked in a hanger? A hangered plane may never need a paint job in a 50 year life if the paint is cared for. One sitting outside could need one in under 10 years.

Also, how often is it flown in bad weather? That impacts the paint just as on a car.

By the way, another option, depending on the condition of your current paint, could be to wrap it. I was looking at that for my experimental if I ever manage to finish it, but you can do that to certified aircraft. There's a company in Atlanta that does it. I'm sure there are others.

Maybe too much sex on mrs ho's BD -

My advice in reference to lower back pain is simply THINK about what you are about to do, involving movements that may strain your back.

* should I get help moving/lifting this?

* well, I used to be able to _________ stop it - that's why your back is now all messed up.

* scoot it, don't lift it

* make larger projects into smaller projects

Oh, my, it's about lunch > nap time. -

I need to go back to the dealer in a few days... They apparently needed to special order a new O2 sensor, and if that doesn't fix the bad readings they're getting then they'll also need to replace my cat.

Funny thing was that one of the service advisers overheard me explaining the CEL and code I got last week when I dropped off the car. As the adviser who was helping me processed and checked in the car, the other guy said "you got a P0420? that doesn't have anything to do with the O2 sensor."

Of course that ended up being the first thing they're going to try replacing. :|

Oh, and the adviser who helped me said the O2 sensor I have could be failing due to.... you guessed it... RUST. lol. Wtf is with my car and rust...
