The pictures and description you provided are consistent with the damage seen from a radial tire that has been operating in an underinflated state for an extended period of time. When a tire is being run at low or zero inflation, the added deflection in the sidewall causes heat buildup which, over time, can damage and weaken the tire. If the pressure is low enough, the outside rim of the wheel can even make contact with the sidewall and shoulder of the tire, damaging it even faster. In your case, the nail likely caused a slow leak that went undetected. Detection of low inflation pressures can be difficult to eyeball, which is why frequent pressure checks are always recommended. So while your tire may have never been completely flat before the event, it was likely low enough for the damage to occur.

Roads didn't do that. Low pressure did. I have had it happen before on another car. It happened with my boat trailer tire just two weeks ago.

Ya. I never trusted those things much. When I got deer bones in my tire once the light didn't come on until well after the tire was slapping the asphalt but get a 20 degree drop in temperature and it will come on as soon as I start the car. Not real helpful in the long run.

Not out classed, our tires are just significantly more attached to our wheels than yours. On a more serious note, glad you weren't hurt.

I bought winter wheels and tires for the WRX two weeks ago, which have been sitting in the basement next to the new wheels and tires for the BRZ I bought a month ago but haven't installed yet. Could be worse?
