Ok, so I thought I did my research on this but apparently not enough? Is this really true?

- Question posted: "I was talking to a tech at my work and he said engine braking can increase oil blow by in the motor by a lot...true or false"

- One of the replies:

Now, I engine brake all the time (along with using my actual brakes, of course). Mostly because I want to hear the exhaust while coming to a stop.

True but exaggerated a bit. Maybe a bigger issue in race cars but still nothing to worry about. If this was the case then you would have oil blow by every single time you took your foot off the gas. The way that is written it sounds like you create a vacuum that suck the oil out but the engine is designed to for both acceleration and deceleration so the statement is a bit extreme. Because I drove truck for so long I always gear down and engine brake and have never had an oil issue with cars that had 400K on them. Don't sweat it.

Sweet! Thanks for the knowledge!

Glad I found the forum before finding that fb group. I honestly don't know why I'm still a part of it.

Sounds plausible. I'd like to hear more too

It sounds like it should suck oil into the cylinder, not increase crank case pressure. I don't see a catch can helping but it seems like you could potentially foul your o2 sensor. I dunno, probably not an issue unless your rings are shot

Ya if you are getting that much oil past everything meant to keep oil where it is supposed to be then engine braking is probably the least of your problems.

Just remember brake pads are what? $20 $60? A new engine is like $5k sooo unless it's life or death just use your brakes!

So I recently discovered a fair amount of blow by on my breather tube. I dont engine break but I do downshift sometimes when slowing and do a fair amount of hard driving mostly using partial throttle. Discussing it with guys that know more they said driving partial throttle causes more blow by then full throttle.

Basically if you can see oil residue on your breather tube (small line branching off just before the throttle body) then you could benefit from a catch can. Still figuring out if mounting it to the PCV is better (I think it will help more but need to do more research)
