Oh yea I was just thinking about the current times where mainstream cars are mostly a numbing experience. It wasn't as bad before.

I remember the days when my old man drove company stick shift Accords and Legends while the family Integra was a 4 speed auto. Good times!

These days the only time I get to rock a 4 speed auto is on the weekends hauling ass with the old Lexus. 10 speed? That's like a bicycle (I know now they are upto 11 and 12 speeds).

My real beef is if the transmission regardless of MT or AT isn't any good in its implementation, then why even bother. I rather go with a good MT sports car or a good AT luxury sedan cuz usually you won't go wrong with either of these default design choices. I also don't understand why I would ever want to manually shift a slushbox. DSG on the other hand is a totally different beast.

Normally I would agree, but newer generations ATs are much better at shifting on demand, much more crisp, and frankly shift faster than I ever could a manual transmission.

I manually downshift my FR-S all the time (including double taps) even when in full auto mode and drive it in manual mode about 25% of the time.

I have found that on rare occasion it is better to manually shift an AT (I do drive way too many rental cars as a pilot because I don't have any of my personal exocraft when I land away from home base). Like when you don't want to be hard into the gas but you know that you want to be at a high rpm when you exit the turn type situation... Depending on the AT lag could be a millisecond or several if you just shifted with the gas pedal. Also it's sometimes easier to hold your speed with a higher RPM...

I was just thinking about how the number of speeds in an AT have increased over the years. It makes perfect sense.

The 1950 Chevrolet AT had 105 HP and a 2 speed AT ...... that's 53 HP per speed.

The new Cadillac CTS-V has 640 HP and a 10 speed AT ..... that's 64 HP per speed.

Make since to you ??........

The increase in fidelity of the control system will cause the answer to approach 0.

There were some shots of "circuit driving" where the driver was wearing big heavy flame resistant gloves that didn't match. Just looked funny.

I just put in an offer for a car up in Washington. I might be driving down your way soon.
