The problem I would have with that is that I would go nuts if I had to sit there with another persons fat ass spilling over into my seat ......

Ahhh.....when flying, I yearn for the good old days. Catch a coast to coast red eye flight and as soon as the seat belt sign goes off, dive into an empty row, push up all the armrests, throw a bunch of pillows down, grab a blanket, buckle up (being sure to show the hostess that you are buckled up) AND tell her that you DO NOT want to be disturbed for any refreshments or snacks.

YES! ...... a 4-5 hour nap ......

This is absolutely pure genius!
Our preferred airline is also SW and due to my wife's disability we always get preboarded so always have the first pick of seats. I am going to do this from now on.

Canada does not now, nor ever did register tractors either.

Well, of course. I didn't need another drink because I'd had plenty in the frequent flyer lounge, or whatever they were called.

Anyone remember those lounges, sit in recliner lounge chairs, you could smoke, the pretty girl would make and bring you drinks and she would let you know when it was time to head to the gate for boarding.......

Do those places still exist ......??

Sort of. They are usually crowded and far from relaxing but still better than the terminal in general. And smoking all depends upon the State you are in.

Brings to mind when I used to take the commuter train into NYC from CT.

Those grubby, cold, train cars didn't have armrests, so I would plant myself at a window seat and place my briefcase next to me on the seat, with my arm on it. Since I wasn't a frequent train rider, sometimes I would be in a seat that some regular commuter would think it was his private train car and he would just stand there glaring at me.

I just kept looking out through the dirty window at the crumbling parts of the towns and cities along the way. Screw him!

If you go to Hartsfield Jackson, the brewing company Terrapin Station (from Athens, GA) has a bar upstairs where you can smoke your own stuff or buy cigars. They have hookahs, but even after a year, they don't actually use them because (the hose is broke).

shame. I do love a good hookah session. pick on me all y'all want.

i always go though and have a few puffs on a cheap cigar, though.

People Air Lines and deregulation ruined that for flyers. Once fliers started insisting on the lowest possible fares, the ability to fly seats empty at a profit was lost.

An empty seat is spoilage. You can never earn that money back, so if the margins are thin then you have to fly every possible seat full. You do that by reducing number of flights until lost sales support an additional flight.

So you either get cheap flights or you get lots of room, but you can't have both, at least not for long.

I do miss those flights though. Back in the day I once took a 5:00am flight from Miami to Atlanta to catch a connecting flight. It was in an L1011 (for those that don't know planes think 757). There were 4 people on the entire plane that was designed to hold 250. I basically had my own personal flight attendant. Turns out it was primarily a ferry flight where they needed to get a plane each morning from Miami to Atlanta for International flights, and it was almost always like that.

When I travelled more (80's and early 90's) it wasn't unusual for people to go from first class or business class back to coach to do exactly what you describe on long International flights.

On our flight from Phoenix to Detroit on return from Reno we had the very rare experience of an almost empty air craft.

The actual announcement of the gate attendant was great and I remember it word for word (Read in the most stereotypical gay, male, flight attendant voice you can come up with)

"Sooooo folks this is a light flight. You are now all upgraded to boarding group 1A. Hop on the plane and grab a row. Any row. Some of you can have two rows. I don't want to see two people in the same row. We should have you to Detroit in record time."

Which reminds me of a back-in-the-day story about "costs" and crossing the Canadian border.

I sent one of my technicians up to Winnipeg one fall, from California, with a relatively new IH tilt bed truck and a new IH 444 tractor, with a spray rig, to do a couple weeks worth of experimental herbicide field trials.

After a couple of weeks, he completed the trials, but fell ill. So, I told him to get on a plane and fly home and that I would fly up there and drive the truck back to California.

When I tried to cross the Canadian border, the Canadians thought that I had bought the tractor in Canada. True that tractor was built in Canada. They demanded to see a bill of sale and were going to try to charge me some sort of duty.

I tried to explain that the tractor was purchased in California. So, they ask me for its registration. I explained that tractors were not registered in the US.

After getting nowhere, I called our attorneys in NYC and ask them to straighten out the situation. After a 5 hour nap in the truck, they pounded on the window and said that I could proceed to cross the border.

THE END

humfrz
I sent a monitor to BC and it cost about the same as me sending a keyboard to PA. Think it's the cross border shipping that drove the cost up.

Even the set of keycaps that I sent out, weighing about 500g and being sent to Phoenix cost me close to 15 bucks.

This is making me think that I should buy a scale, and a tape measure along with signing up for a small business account with Canada Post and start saving money on shipping.
