The girlfriend showed me our latest hydro bill. Total came out to $44 and change. Looked into where the charges came from. Turns out there's around $25 in just delivery fees. Absolute robbery when over half of your bill is just in fees.
It's all good though. The Ontario government gave us an 8% rebate on the bull's total. Wonder who's going to be footing that bill once the election happens and the party changes? |

We pay for the water by usage and then pay for sewer charges to get rid of it. Every time I wash my car, fill the pool or water the grass I pay the serer charge on the amount of water I used even though it will never see a sewer.

Yep. Sometime around 1900 Ontario set up hydro stations at Niagara falls. They called it the Ontario Hydro-Electric Company. It of course got shortened to the Hydro Company and now all electricity is now called "hydro" around here. Not sure that term applies to all of Canada.

And what percentage of that $180 is for your actual usage? Is more than 50% of it just for the preexisting infrastructure for it to be "delivered" to you?

A long time ago in a country far, far away (The 70's, Norway) the hydroelectric power plants and the distribution grids were owned by the same companies. Delivery charges were non-existent, people paid by the kW/h, linear rates. Of course they still paid for maintenance of the infrastructure, the more electricity they used the more they paid. Some argued that was unfair. Then, they split up the companies ("why, oh why" is a question for another day. Not that anyone is interested in what I have to say about it. Not even Norwegians.) and now we pay for maintenance of infrastructure, flat rate per household and linear pr. kW/h. And life goes on, it really doesn't make much difference. That's not the point I wanted to make, I just needed some finger exercise. Sorry ![]() My point is this: You are paying for maintenance of your "preexisting infrastructure". Your life would go dark pretty fast if they stopped all maintenance. I'm not saying you need to quit complaining. But there must be worthier causes for complaint out there? Don't you have weather or something? |
