My favourite thing in the world is asking someone a question that should have a very specific answer, and getting something very vague in reply.

Me: when you get mail or packages sent here, where do they get delivered to?
Her: idk, just inside the front door or around the stairs.
Me: like, in the locked up part of the building, or the part open to anyone without a key? And around the stairs, like behind them?
Her: yeah the locked up part just inside the door. No, just somewhere around the stairs.

UPS and USPS I can say "on the porch behind a pillar" if its our usual guy, or just "on the porch" otherwise... FedEx is "probably on the porch" and Amazon is "on the porch or near it or maybe at a random neighbor" ... The answer you got may be as specific as the spot packages end up.

The FedEx guy was awesome yesterday, carried two 100lb packages an extra 80feet to the back of the house. He could have just dropped them at the gate. Of course, the UPS guy moved a pile my wife couldn't lift into the house. They must have enough of an issue with theft it's worth it to be nice rather than having to get insurance involved.

No, this is just a convo I had with the gf this morning. This is the first time I'm delivering something to her apartment, so I wanted to know where it would be upon delivery, but I'm still guessing at this point. I'm assuming it'll be somewhere on the first floor.

You won't know till you've had a bunch delivered. You have some ordering to do!

Just sounds like it is indeed variable based upon who is delivering. Sometimes you just can't have a specific answer since there really isn't one.

But the one who deals with the mail is the landlord as Canada post or ups or fed ex or whoever doesn't have a key to the building, so packages get dropped at the front door.

Oh I didn't say it was a good system just that it was variable!

But it shouldn't be a variable and there should only be one spot to grab your mail if it's the same damn person every time bringing the mail in.

Yea, that's my experience.

Our house has a daylight basement that opens in the front of the house under a "second story" wrap-around porch because our yard slopes towards the back of the house (3 stories in front, 2 in back).

There are steps to the porch on the left side right at the house.

UPS delivers to the basement door.
FedEx brings things up on the porch and leaves them by the front door.
USPS leaves items on the porch at the top of the steps.

It's like a treasure hunt every day.

My favorite was 2 packages heaved over the side gate (7' tall) a couple hours before a snow storm, left "at the side door". I never go there, it's just the he 4 feet between houses...

It has been my experience that "variable" is probably the most polite term I have used to describe the actions of building manager or superintendents. I am pretty sure that organizational skill for them are not high on the required abilities list.

Canada Post is the worst!
"I am going to leave the parcel on the ground at the bottom of your stairs because there is a 1/4 inch of snow on them. Please ignore the foot prints where I plowed through 3 feet of snow in the front yards of you and your neighbor because it saved me a 20 foot walk to the cleared sidewalk".

For myself, any packages left on my doorstep can be retrieved from my neighbor's apartment. Or could, if I could figure out which one was taking packages off of people's doorsteps. I've opened a PO box on base purely for package delivery, because I can't depend on packages staying where they're put until I get home to pick them up.
