At least that's how I feel about it, when I get into my FR-S my immediate thought is "gosh this is really slow". Some people think a 1ZZ has more torque, but they're plain wrong, the 2ZZ is actually a little bit stronger in the low end, the same around 3000rpm, and slightly weaker in the 5000-6000rpm range before the second cam engages. The small cam has lower duration which is better for the low end, but very low lift which chokes the engine a little.

My FR-S is basically stock. I flashed it back to stock since I'm trying to sell it, but with the tune it had appreciably more grunt than stock. A header would help a lot, but it is a s***load of money and you would also have to find the right smog check person to stuff a few benjamins which is not cool.

I like to think of the Spyder like a motorcycle with some pannier bins, the only thing you carry in it is yourself plus a bag or two. Performance wise it's plenty fast with a stock 2ZZ. A tune gets you into the 200bhp range before any physical modifications, and brings the low end torque up a good amount, and would be perfect as far as power is concerned IMO. A K20 or 2AR-FE would be better for durability however.
Yeah, a k20 would be perfect, but also a bit more expensive lol. Good info. The spyder doesn't really feel slow just curious cuz it's still a decent amount of money for the 2zz so just something I was hesitant on. It wouldn't be any time soon that I swap but just wondering how much money to dump in to other parts or just save for another twin.

You have a 5 speed or 6 speed in the spyder?

I have a header and tune on the FRS and it is quick enough. If I could get the Spyder to feel like that (or faster as you say) I would be good with it I think.

There's probably a 2pac video on YouTube that explains it all.

Because we like annoying rap and ear-piercing metal? And what about all the other genres?

I counter with one of my personal favorites:

When did this become a thing? Can we go back to actual meaningful units like pound-feet or Newton-meters?

Oops, sorry. Newton-metres.

I love classical music; am ok with opera. In my car I need something of uniform loudness, because all the quiet bits get drowned out by road noise. So, rock. Or metal.

That said, the Russian Easter Overture and 1812 Overture were absolutely phenomenal in my old 4runner. As long as I wasn't driving, so I could hear the quiet parts.

It's getting a 6 speed put in right now, the 2ZZ blew a few weeks ago With the 5 speed it's still fast, but obviously your ratios aren't as close which is not as fun.

I think all said and done, the 2ZZ is worth it, but in California if you are mechanically inclined and don't care that much for the high revs, you might want to just supercharge the 1ZZ so it's easy to get past smog. With a very high budget, I would do a 1NZ-FE with Apexi PFC and bellhousing swap between the C60 and C52, and then put a TVS 900 or Rotrex on it. Some guy raced a stock 1NZ with a turbo strapped on and overclocked to 8000rpm for years without a problem, which is kind of crazy haha. That would match the power of a 2ZZ, but be 50lbs lighter. Something similar would be a 2ZR-FE swap with Rotrex, heavier but more reliable, or a 2AR-FE swap, which would be more powerful and reliable, but quite a bit heavier.

The thing with the 2ZZ swap is that it's just so so easy. You buy a motor for 1200 bucks, an ECU for 200, a swap header for 500, the mount for 75, and the harness adapter for 300, and right there you have a 11.5 compression nearly 200bhp motor with a decent tune from the factory. It's not as strong or powerful as a K20, but replacement engines are quite cheap and for street driving the 2ZZ shouldn't have any problems.

Damn, sucks about the engine. Looking forward to your thoughts paired up to the 6 speed though compared to 5speed.

There are legal SC kits for the 1zz??? I actually don't like higher revs when cruising which kills me with the stock car so a SC would be perfect.

I picked it up from Jeremy Clarkson and decided I loved the term.

You should know I'm talking in pound-feet, I'm Canadian!

There's the TRD kit but it doesn't actually fit without modification. You could probably sneak a supercharger by if you can stick it under the intake manifold, because it's really hard to see back there. Just stick some insulation there and they will never know.

One thing I've wanted to do (although I would prefer a newer engine to do this with, because the 1ZZ is really old and not that great) is to modify the alternator and drive a supercharger with an RC car motor. You buy the cold side of a big turbo for 200 bucks, get a 40000rpm motor with controller for 300, hack up your alternator's regulator circuit so it produces more voltage, and then add a DC-DC converter to power the car's electronics for 200 more. Much cheaper than a supercharger kit, and you don't need to worry about changing the supercharger gear oil or clutch. It would be good for around 200bhp.

If you had a lot of money, you could swap in a Honda engine with a Jackson Racing supercharger kit, but it would be like 15k.

The one place that you can save money on with all this is that a supercharged engine producing more power would be good to pair with the longer geared C66 transmission, which can be found much cheaper than the other LSD equipped Toyota transmissions.
