How about why tire height is measured as a percentage of width... What the fuck is up with that? Why can't they just tell us how tall it is?

In tire design, the aspect ratio of the tire is a much better indication of a tire's dynamic characteristics as well as the load carrying capacity, so it is a very useful measurement to the engineers. Just a height measurement would be nearly meaningless to us.

I do agree that it is close to useless to the consumer. What I really do think is absurd is that half the measurements are metric and half are standard and then theres p metric... Its like we converted most of it then gave up along the way.

Maybe before low profile tires became prominent the 2 numbers were too close to being the same and it was confusing. I'm sure Tcoat knows, he was around when they were invented

But it's useful to the consumer. I look for tires based on a height(maintain stock height but increase width), I don't want to have to do math for every tire size I see. I feel that should be done on the engineers side, not the consumer side

My tire size knowledge extends to "Those look good I will take them" so I am of no help on that one.

I fully agree, and I had the same thoughts before I got so used to tire measuements. I didn't write the rules, I just follow them.

I'll take some time and pull up the into courses the company gave me when I started here, to see if theres anything else I can say about it that might help
