I have had this debate many times over the years and many never get it.
I served in a very confusing era. I joined when Vietnam was still very much in the public eye but neither the US nor Canada were in combat situations anyplace in the world. This was mostly due to the fact that it was a very tense period in the Cold War and it would not take much for even a small event to result in nukes getting tossed around (this was a real and imminent threat no matter what the younger generations may think). As a result of the period I served in I have had a few people tell me I was never a "real" soldier. I am used to this thought process.

What I can not stand is a younger generation that learns their history and forms opinions based upon movies and video games. We see it here all the time with cars. Such things as "how do I use NOS", "I think that big fucking wing looks great even though my car is running full stock and could never take advantage of it" and "the XXX is the bestest car in the world even though I have never sat in one" are common comments and opinions that are driven purely from movies and games even if at a subconscious level.

I just had the whole "it is a movie dude don't take it as real" conversation with a good friend last Saturday. We were watching the movie Fury and he kept spewing "facts" and how "real" the movie was. He swore the movie was based on an actual event. This is a guy that has never even held a weapon much less served any military time. If not familiar with the movie it ends (spoiler alert) with a Sherman tank crew with a thrown track annihilating most of a veteran SS Grenadiers company. As these veterans troops run around and do stupid shit like run blindly into full automatic gun fire or run 100 yards away to hide in a building. This goes on for about 45 minutes. The reality would be that as soon as the column scouts spotted the obviously still intact tank (probably an hour or so before the column arrived) they would have brought up the guys with the RPGs and blasted it. The guys in that tank would all have been dead before they even knew there was a column coming. This is the sort of SHIT that people are now thinking is history and it gets worse with every passing generation. No wonder some people think all military members should be Superman.

I am too young to know any of this but I would imagine serving (or even living) during that time was more frightening then during war time (i.e. Vietnam, WWI/II, etc). Getting deployed to the front lines would be one thing but nukes dont leave anyone a chance. MAD is some crazy shit.

Actually I would love some insight. i have done a few papers on the Cuban Missle Crisis and it really did seem like we were that close to the world getting blown to hell. What was it actually like?

It was scary as hell really. There is a great documentary that the Military Channel (now the America Hitler Channel) did back many years ago called The Unsung Heros that talks about the military during the Cold War period between the end of Vietnam and the fall of the Berlin wall.

People either do not know or do not realize that this period was the closest that the world ever came to actual nuclear exchange. When in Germany we would drill for Nuclear Biological and chemical attacks constantly. There is nothing like running around living in a suit for a week knowing perfectly well that you are actually at ground zero of a first strike and unlike the people back home your warning will be in seconds instead of minutes or hours.

During my UN Peacekeeping tour in Lebanon I was under fire (they claimed they were "mistakes") 4 times for a total of about 1/2 an hour. I would rather experience that again than sitting waiting for an all clear from a "This is a Stage 3 NBCW alert. This is not a drill". The big thing was there was nobody to fight back against and you felt totally helpless. We still had too maintain a readiness to fight if the Soviets decided to come swarming over instead of turning you all into radioactive dust. It was very real and surreal at the same time. We drank a lot!

Also, much like today about 80% of us were kids between the ages of 18 and 21 not the grizzled veterans of COD.

Edit: and the 14 year old looking guy behind me with his arms in the air spent 38 years serving. On his last deployment to Afghanistan before retirement his truck tangled with a IED and he lost his body to the pelvis. He is alive but says he really misses his dlck. So Ashi if you are lurking. Screw you.

Is it sort of odd knowing that I am aware of some random dude on the internets taste in women? I creeped myself out with that thought.
