God, I hope they know what they are doing.
You know that means that the employees know exactly how much you know about running the plant, which means that they are all slacking off, hence the lack of disaster noises.

Nah they know I know how it runs. We actually were 2% over normal which could be bad since they may want to know how I did it and my only answer would be "I left them alone".

And that, folks, is how effective management works.

I mean they are only making rotors. What could possibly go wrong?

Do those get turned on a lathe or is there some kind of "rotor machine". Do they start out as a casting?

Casting is turned on machines similar to lathes, drilled and then balanced. There are very tight specs and they are gauged many times through the process. Oh and those things will rust if you look at them wrong until treated.
We make about 5 million a year in our plant.

That's about what I expected. Seemed the most efficient. Do they load automatically or does someone have to stick each one in the chuck?

Pretty much all auto. Robot picks casting up from dunnage, it passes through all the machines and guy at the end of the line puts it in the customer dunnage.
Now the guys have to do several things in between but the machines do all the heavy work.

I'm guessing if you've seen a few episodes of "How It's Made" you have a rough idea of how just about everything is made.

While there are millions of different widgets in the world, only a handful of processes make most of them.

Pretty much only the scale of the equipment changes.
I used to work where they made heavy truck springs and it was the most diversified as far as process went. Ranged from pretty much hand forging all the way to laser and plasma robotic cutting and just about every level of tech in between. You could watch 3 episodes of How It's Made on the place and still not se every operation. The heat treat operators were closer to witch doctors than factory workers.
