Every time I hear this question, I think back to this article:

First off get a BRZ rather than an FRS, wont get into why but just do it. Second I was in this same dilemma when I was car shopping back in September and here is why I chose the brz. It is the manufactures responsibility to give you a proper platform to play with and it is your responsibility to add power or whatever it is you want. That being said and for the price the BRZ is dominant. If we consider price, the price difference between the 3.8 and a FI BRZ is minuscule and I can assure you, you will have a better more fun all around car with the BRZ if you add a turbo or SC. The ONLY thing I liked better in the Genny was the slack in the gear shifter bc thats a preference but as far as power/handling/feel BRZ is utterly superior. What is funny is I have a friend with a 3.8 with coils and I managed to still pass him on the inside of a corner with a bone stock BRZ and to this day he is salty about it. He currently is looking to trade it in for that new fiat FR in 2017.

I am actually very interested in the "why" of this statement.

Because bros/yolos/squadeys/tool bag flat brimmers look down on scions. Everyone knows the BRZ is a better car Tcoat...
Evidence of this: A week after I got my car I was picking up some marine fish, and while in the store an employee asked "yo is that you FRS out there?". I looked over cringed and replied "yes". He then said "One question man, why not the BRZ?". He then proceeded to tell me how much better the BRZ was than the FRS. I even learned about the differences in power and drivetrain from this very intelligent enthusiast.

Yeah Utah is snowy and I had a Subaru fan completely at a loss why I took the FRS over the BRZ because as he puts it "you need AWD in Utah" |

I clicked on your link and noticed all the performance upgrades you did, nice! Didn't read through whole post, but how much HP did it increase by? Run the 1/4? Also, love those wheels that are on your car! |

Thanks though man! I loved my Frs, but unfortunately now it is gone. Traded it for a 16 wrx as my needs had changed. I have been ironically considering jumping back into to an 86 though when law school starts. I will be commuting roughly two hours every other weekend to school and back. I could use the extra mpg and lower payments (also was offered a trade in of 24.5k and I only paid 25k lol). If I do it will probably be have around 50k as they can be had around me for 15k and I'd only probably keep it until I graduate. As for the upgrades I did. The ESC is a blast and really adds some pep to the car. It also allows for super easy install and provides a ton of low end torque. The ESC will put you at roughly 13.7 1/4 mile. It is in no way comparable to a full time FI unit though, however I believe it will get there at some point. That combined with my bolt ons made for an enjoyable car but you get use to the power rather quickly. I had some very unfortunate events happen that caused me to sell the ESC and I later picked up the turbo but never had a chance to install it. If I were to do it all over again, and was looking for power, I'd suggest to anyone to just go FI from the start. If you're just looking for sound or to get rid of the dip then bolt ons are fine, but they won't make the car really any faster. You will just have a slightly slower car.

On the handling front peeps always seem to forget the huge difference tyres make. Put me both on the same rubber and then we can really see which is the better chassis (having only driven the 86 I can't give a fair opinion in this instance). Interesting match up of cars though. More so than the 'Cayman vs 86' debate anyways.
