@Packofcrows I hope you know every time I go past this damn thread and see "Why don't we fall off the Earth?" I keep saying in my head "because of gravity dumbass." and go on with my day. I've said it for the 20th time in my head now and thought I would share.

Just take the blue pill and when you wake up they will be gone. That is how I deal with them when they show up here.

Yeah got a pm with that already. It's not as simple as just gravity. After all, we also hold some insignificant level of it. Now what is gravity? The mutual attraction of mass to mass?

How are they even attracted? See, gravity is not a force!

What determines gravity? Why would a black hole the size of an ant hold more gravity than the earth?


Haha @MisterSheep it's not as simple as because it pulls you down. I was just trying to create a techy/sciency/philosophy/thinking thread. ...but seems like most don't understand the thought. After all, it's more than a question.

And before someone says wtf cares?! Well, it was just a intent to have a odd and more different chat.

Man Tcoat, I get chills looking at those pics. Nothing beats going to visit family members in Culiacan MX and finding a crime scene where the cops are yelling at each other over walkie talkies as they attempt to find a way to pick up 3/4 of a head that was dropped off a moving vehicle.

Nope. Actually very busy today.


Since 7:00 this morning I have:


Completed creating and released to maintenance robotic cell entry procedures for the 6 cells at our new plant.


Set annual goals for all 4 plants and reviewed them with the respective Plant Managers (conference call).


Reviewed a proposal and approved $120K for a large equipment guarding upgrade.


Interviewed another candidate for an engineering position.


Assigned corrective actions from a Prestart Safety Review on all the equipment in the new plant to the appropriate parties.


Reviewed and approved 2 capital expenditure requests for lift devices (and rejected one that was incomplete).


Ordered 4 new AEDs for the plants.


and


Asked the janitor to clean up the First Aid room floor.

On the whole idea that the moon landing was faked, etc., that is exactly what my GG-uncle thought in 1969! Of course, he was 90 years old at the time... He said it was all done in Hollywood.

This is how science works: We observe some evidence. We verify that this/these observation(s) are correct (within an acceptable margin of error). We make a prediction based on this observed evidence (hypothesis) and (this next part is key) that is testable. If the prediction is accurate, we adopt this model as a reasonable explanation of the observed evidence (a theory). If the hypothesis fails to make an accurate prediction, then we go back and form a new hypothesis to explain the evidence.

After a while, some new evidence may emerge that challenges the theory that we formed. After confirming that the new evidence is accurate, we form a new hypothesis that takes into account both the old evidence and the new evidence. Etc., etc. Any resulting explanation (i.e., theory) is a successively refined description of the facts of the physical world as they have been observed. One must also keep in mind that the observation could be faulty, in which case back to square one.

A good example is that of Aristotle's experiment of burning a block of wood over a flame and observing what occurred during the process of combustion. He determined by his observations that the world was made of four "elements": Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The earth was the leftover ash, the air was the steam and other gases escaping from the burning wood, fire (self-explanatory) and water (liquid dripping from the piece of wood as it burned). What he had actually identified were the four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma.

He did not, however, recognize that his model was far too rough to have any useful descriptive or predictive powers, nor did he form any sort of hypothesis that was capable of being tested or rejected. Over millenia, that model was refined until we have reached the model (chemistry) that we use today. It is obviously still not complete as a model, but it is much closer than the one Aristotle used. In 500 more years, the model will be better still. What is not scientific is to develop alternative explanations for evidence that are not testable or verifiable. Saying that NASA faked it is an example of that sort of argument; short of some sort of compelling physical evidence to the contrary, it is not reasonable to doubt the explanation that the Earth is round based on the available evidence.

Not all balloons rise; fill it with argon and it will drop like a stone in a pond. That is because argon is 20 times denser than air. Less dense matter floats on top of more dense matter. Gravity pulls on all of it, but the denser stuff sinks to the bottom first.

The thinker is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the existence of thought. Descartes may have just thought he was.
