Legally you still need a front plate, so there's going to be something there. ADRs state that there needs to be somewhere to attach a plate to (See the previous sentence) |

I am after slimline plates (Qld) when I get my 86, my major concern was the supplied plate holder being too large for the slimline plate. A few people said just cut it down to make it fit, the only problem with that being that the plate holder is moulded to fit in the recess between the bumper and the grill and I reckon with my severe lack of skills that I would completely f*#k it up. I had another look at the plate holder today when I went for another test drive (even though I've already ordered mine) and those massive square holes in the bumper made me think that there was no way I was getting a slimline plate.
Never the less I contacted Gary at Lakin's Plates (website advertised in an earlier post) and he has already measured up the 86 for a slimline plate and it would fit (80mm between top and bottom factory bolt holes and Qld slimline plates are 100mm). He has designed a plate that would have legs fitted to reach back under the top of the bumper to the grill and is in the process of engineering a bracket that would be designed more like the stock holder with rolled edges so that you don't see the legs. Also the plate would still be high enough to cover up those massive square holes in the bumper. I am definitely going to get in touch with him again when I know my car is on it's way and look at getting one of his brackets, I realise that they aren't the cheapest option but then again it's not the cheapest car I have ever bought so why scrimp on a couple of hundred bucks. |

Sutty, are you only going to get brackets for the front or will you get ones for the back as well? I was having a browse the other day, can't decide if I'll get the back ones too like they had on the website. Interested to see what they come up with for the front. Keep us posted!

Yes I'm going for front and back. I know that local Toyota garage will put their own advertising crap one on the back and that'll be getting taken off straight away. If I can organise it I might even drop off the Lakin holders at the garage and see if they'll put them on when they are getting it ready. I'm figuring the back one will just be standard not a custom job.

I was thinking along the same lines as well.
Going to get plate protectors/covers as well? I was going to order a full set but I need to get a new date for the arrival of my car. I wouldn't trust the dealer to do it, they'd probably stuff that up anyway! |

My brother and I are looking into getting a custom front bracket fabricated. Trying to create an all in one bracket + frame/protector with the 86 logo integrated into it somehow.
More to come as we look into costs involved! |

So here are some renders of an early prototype for a slimline plate.
With plate: ![]() Without plate: ![]() Different view with plate: ![]() Different view without plate: ![]() Right profile view: ![]() The goal was to create an OEM looking plate bracket that also acted as a frame for the plate. So as you can see the design itself is based on the OEM bracket, matching the exact body contours/curvatures of the car. It will bolt directly onto the existing holes without any modifications required. We've also tried to cover up the bottom two holes (inside the grille) from the OEM bracket, however, if someone who already has the car can remove their plate and bracket and take a picture we can then be certain we have successfully done so. Anyways, we're still not sure whether we'll put these into production, let us know how many of you guys will be interested in possibly buying one of these and we can probably work something out. |

eleu2166 - what are you thinking of fabricating these brackets from?
I would certainly be interested so long as the bracket will cover up the two square holes in the front of the bumper and use factory bolt holes for attachment. |

As for hiding the two square holes and using factory bolt holes, the answer is yes, and yes. |
