Yeah those were fun day pre 2012, I wouldn't be who I am now today if it wasn't for this car.

We came a long way

I remember arguing with people on Nasioc. This one dude was absolutely certain that the Subaru would be AWD and it was pretty easy to tell from the mules that they'd pushed the front axles forward and that would prevent symmetric AWD. Then the BRZ prologue concept was shown and it verified no AWD. The gnashing of teeth was glorious.

I requested on a Toyotanation long ago a wish list of what would get me interested in another Toyota. I remember it pretty well, it was a car with RWD, 6-speed manual, light weight, limited slip differential, at least 2+2 seating and a affordable price. I thought this was a pipe dream because at that time there was literally no interesting vehicle in the Toyota lineup, the only thing I thought was interesting but I would never get was the FJ Cruiser because of its retro inspired design.

To be honest I wasn't sure about the Subaru/Toyota alliance all the way back when it was rumours. To me it seemed silly that Toyota couldn't develop its own engine especially with its rich history. It was only by FT-86 II concept that I eventually had a Subaru to drive, I was no longer concerned about the Subaru engine, in fact I respect the flat 4 greatly after owning a car with one.

Fast forward, and the car came out...I was not at all disappointed by the mechanical features. I was only a little miffed that it was 2700 lbs rather than the intended 2500. Still, finally Toyota made the car I requested so I had to drive it. Pleased with the drive, I bought one as I stated all that time ago.

As for looks. I'm actually fine with how the production 86 looks from the front. I think it was very faithful to the original FT-86 concepts mixing some of I and II together. I think FT86 I had the best looking head lights. The rear, I think FT86 II was the best, my least favourite being FRS concept and it seems the production car was FRS inspired.
