MT:Problems with engine rattling in 2nd gear.

Is this normal and is there a solution ? Please Help

My engine makes a rattling sound when I accelerate below 27km p/h in 2nd gear and I can't down shift to 1st. I always have to launch it so it doesn't rattle the engine.

I'm always at a speed where it's to slow for gear 2 and too fast to shift into gear 1 so I try give it some gas gently and still rattles, even worse if I'm going up hill Does turbo increase torque at low revs ?

What rpms are you at? It could just be the engine bogging since you are at such a low speed in second.

27 km/h = 16.2 mph
That's 2029 rpm.
I think mine makes noise until about 2200 rpm when I'm stepping on the gas.

If I'm "always" at the speed too low for 2nd gear, then I would just stay in 1st gear.

You can also double clutch into 1st so it is somewhat smother

So it's ok too accelerate and have that noise ?

What if I have to turn safely at a round about during wet weather? I enter the turn in gear 2 instead of 1 because I have to slow way down to get into 1 which pisses of traffic behind me. I usually launch it a bit but I find it really wrong having to launch it out of every turn

I don't know if it's ok or not. But I feel uncomfortable accelerating with that noise. So, I either be really gentle on the gas to prevent the noise or use the clutch like if I'm launching in 1st gear. Let's say if I were to accelerate fast from 20 km/h in 2nd gear, I would first depress the clutch all the way and then gas & release clutch similar to when I do in 1st gear launch from stop. But I don't know if this is a right thing to do. Now, I wonder what other people do.

Sounds like you're lugging the engine, buying a turbo to fix it is like buying a 3 ton pickup so you can bring a ten pound bag of soil home for a gardening project. This is something that you could induce in any manual transmission car and you should know how to drive around it.

What you're describing sounds like it shouldn't be an issue, this engine is more sensitive to lugging than most but I don't feel you will cause any damage accelerating from 1,500+ rpm, any lower than that and I'd downshift. Definitely don't mash the gas when you're under 2,000 rpm as you already know it doesn't do any good and just makes more noise, gently let the revs come up with partial throttle, the people behind you can deal with it. That being said I often feather the clutch as described above by sigh-on-rice typically when I'm below the 1.5k rpm range and feel that going to first is unnecessary, yes it will put extra wear on your clutch but they are meant to be worn and replaced, no big deal in my opinion.

For me it is not impossible to get into first gear at ~25 mph (40 kph), you have to double clutch:

1. Clutch in, shift to neutral
2. Clutch out, rev to ~4k rpm
3. Clutch in, gently but firmly slide gear lever into first, try to maintain rpm in the ~3k neighborhood but depending on your speed you may need 3.7k rpm, I don't know.
4. Slowly release clutch

It will likely jerk and buck around as there is much less margin for error in matching engine speed to wheel speed than shifting from 4-3 or 3-2 but with practice you can be smooth.

Even the smallest turbos don't really do much until about 3k rpm. You just have to slip the clutch and throttle a little bit to get the revs up when that happens. Eventually, it'll become second nature to you. You only want to downshift into first when you are crawling about 0-5 mph.

Thanks for all the replies !!

Is there any sort of modification that will increase the cars low end torque so I don't have to slip the clutch all the time ?

At those RPMs it wouldn't do you much good. As everybody has stated, it's all about refined shifting at this point.

Just learn to drive the car in the 2500+ range. There are ver rare moments for the car to be in 2nd at sub-2000RPM and require quick acceleration.
