new summer set
Hello,
Today I am shopping around for summer wheels/tires, I have came up with a combination and was wondering what ya'll thought of it For wheels i've selected O.Z. ULTRALEGGERA Size:17x8 Offset:48mm Backspacing:6.38" Bolt Pattern:5-100 Rec. Tire Size:235/40-17 Weight:17.2 lbs. Finish:Matte Matte bronze painted Construction:1pc. Low Pressure Cast Finish Warranty:2 Year https://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Whee...kageFlow=false and for tires, i have selected G-FORCE RIVAL S 1.5 - SIZE: 225/45R17 https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...cleSearch=true Let me know what you guys think on the selections, and also the fitment, these are just a bit wider. Not looking to slide at all, by the way. Thanks as always guys. may ya'll have a great day.

It'll look almost stock like which is good if thats what you want. That tire is great for that size wheel. Yes the wheel and tires a little wider than stock size, but because its a +48 offset which is high it wont stick out a lot. Typically if you want your wheels and tires to be flush with fenders you would need lower offsets.

Konig Dekagram 17x8-40 can be an option for that style. I think 40mm offset is better.

Unless you are planning on using those tires to hot lap at autocross/track day and trying to set fast times, you're wasting your money for street use, and you will see diminished life spans. To use those tires to their potential on the street you have to be driving way above the speedlimit in tight roads. If you're on factory alignment settings, you'll just be rolling them onto their shoulders anyway.

Not sure your goal for your car, so can't really say much on your setup. Trying to get more traction? Weekend warrior? Track here and there without breaking the bank? Show car? Just daily? Without a bit more info, we can say anything we want and it'll be legit cuz your question is without context. Why you went w 17" instead of 18" or 19"? Also why 8" width, instead of 9" or 9.5"? Only thing we know is you're not looking to slide. If that's the case, OEM wheels with a bit more stickier tires will be efficient enough.

I have since posted this updated the size to 18s and switched out the tires to RE-71s as they can handle wet conditions better. Why 8", Im not too sure much larger will be beneficial for me, however im no professional so I very well could be wrong on that.. also not lookin to have my tires stick out an inch past my fenders. Thanks for the reply, hope this helps.

So going with your info, if you want, you have a bit more options. If you wanna stay in 17's. Can do 8~9 width (depends on which autox class you wanna stay). Offset, you got technically go til +32, it won't poke out (depends on wheel design, tire width & camber). You can go into 18's. Just remember wider and bigger you go, less comfortable daily driving gonna be (due to tire wall). As for the tire setup, 225 width is a standard for the twins... unless you put FI, then it's different story.Bolt on mods won't need wider than 225 tires, just get stickier tires. From there, you decide on how sticky you want your tires. But like other member said, more sticky it gets life of the tires become shorter. I had good amount of different wheels & tires setup. Wheels: 17x8+55, 17x9+35, & 18x8+35. Tires: 235/40-17, 245/40-17 & 225/40-18. But in the end, I enjoy 17x8+35 w 225/45-17 setup for everything. Great offset, flushed w the fenders (maybe just fraction inside) & tires get enough traction. |

I picked up a set of Ultraleggera's 17x8 +48 (Satin Black) last fall. I mounted 235/40/17 Falken RT660's, and I've been happy with them.
I autocross the car and had a couple events before the season ended last year. I was pleased with the upgrade (coming from stock wheels and 215/45/17 RE-71's), but I need more seat time to really give a good opinion. The +48 option is a nice OEM+ fit. You can get +35 from Tire Rack, but you have to search for a 4th generation Jetta (1999-2004) to see it available. The bolt pattern is 5x100, but I think the hub-centric rings might not be right. I'd buy these wheels again (I actually might for a different color). I think 17's are better for autocross, but I'm not an expert by any means. There's a bunch of good options for tires in the 200TW rating (RE-71's, A052's, RT660's, and more) so it's a bit of a personal choice and whatever the budget allows. If you want RE-71's, get them while you can. Check out the wheel directory threads for both the +48 or +35 to get more info. |
