I'm glad this thread exists because I'm having a similar issue with the size. I'm most likely going with a 17x8 wheel and I can't decide between a 225/45 and a 245/40 tire. I like the 245/40 more because it has less speedo error (but I know people will say 1.3% vs 0.3% isn't really an issue) and because I kind of like the meaty tire look. But I'm worried a 245/40 is too much tire for stock power. 225/45 is cheaper, and judging by this thread and other stuff I've read, there is a such thing as too wide on tires, so skinnier is better on stock power.

What are you doing with the car? Daily driving? Competitive racing? A mix of both?

You are probably good with the 225s then.

For what it's worth, I'll be ordering some 17x9 Rota Torques in the future with 225/45/17 Hankook V12 Evos. I daily drive my car as well as doing a lot of twisties/ spirited driving. No track or auto cross driving, however.

17x9 wearing 245s is pretty popular. people say that a 225 on a 9" rim is stretched but 225mm is as close to 9" as you can get so i dont quite get it.

I just put some Max Performance 205/45-17 tires (wider tread than the stock Primacy HP) on my 17x7.5 40mm offset wheel set...the FRS is more awesome than its ever been! [This is both in comparison to stock tires on the same 17x7.5 wheels and 215/45-17 track tires on 17x8 +36mm offset wheels] A freaking riot for daily driving that' made me giggle and laugh uncontrollably and hysterically for the first time ever in 2 years... the 86 should have been designed around 205/45-17 tire size - you got to try it!

Same tire questions

I have a new 2016 BRZ and am trying to figure out tire size. I have hurt head.

I am leaning toward 245/40/17 but am confused on the x9, x8, etc configuration. I am doing 2-3X week driving (second car).

I like a meatier tire look, but also want practical.

Thanks in advance!

17x8 or 17x9 will be fine paired with 245/40/17

Just note that 17x9 might have clearance issues in the front, depending on which wheel you buy and what suspension you have

Tread width-wise, the wider tires aren't really wider (click on the specs tab: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ot+Super+Sport), but they certainly cost more. The tread width of 8.2" is plenty for a car with your car's power, and will serve you well until you're north of 200 RWHP.

A general rule of thumb for performance is to keep the tire's tread width within +/- 1" of the wheel width. In that 2" range, if you have a choice, a wider wheel with a narrower tire will provide more performance.
Nice thread and I agree with this post 100%. I went through this whole process a month ago

245 will not fit on 7" wide stock wheels. For 17x7 your options are 205,215, and 225.

So a 245 tire is not too wide for an 8" wheel?

I'm leaning towards 8" (vs 9") for cost and weight reduction, and will be throwing 235/40R17 BF goodrich sport tires on there. I know a 235 will work on a 9" wheel as well so I COULD go 9" width.

However I don't want any issues with clearance as I'm going to stick with the stock suspension and stock ride height.
