I think most people are too quick to jump on the bandwagon but for me it's not terribly hard to identify aspects that I simply dislike - removed of whatever's vogue. The grey plastic trim conflicts with just about everything except for the paint that matches it exactly IMO. Had the same feelings about the new Z - ugly ass front, like someone took a rectangular block while 3d modeling and shoved it in the grill and hit the overlap --> delete button. Totally conflicts with the curves of the car. And the 2nd gen ft86 - I love the front, the back is okay.
None of those things are going to change for me anyways, at least because I'm not on any bandwagons.

Conversely I think the new Supras have always looked gorgeous. But what do I know.

Nothing about the front end stands out to me, for good or ill. The cladding and hexagonal wheel wells are so bad though, ooof. Interior materials look nicer, but need to see/feel in person to really assess that.

I’m more disappointed in the performance figures than anything else. The old chassis was aging in dog years…and this one is only like 25% stiffer? They’re bragging about mounting points because torsional rigidity is barely up from the floppy current ones? Ouch. And don’t get me started on the new engine dropping the rev limit to nearly 6k for seemingly no benefit over the FA20. Compared to the GTI and Golf R that’s a real letdown.

Oh well: cross that off the potential-next-car list for me.

The engine torque curve is much flatter than before from what I understand though.

As a previous WRX and STI owner, I was really looking forward to the release on Friday, I was super excited that the WRX was going to look more like the concept and surely it would get bumped to 300HP.

The cladding is disgusting, while i'm sure the 2.4 will make more power on a tune, that throws me out of warranty. The back of the car is purely atrocious.

Maybe they'll surprise us with the STI, but i'm not holding my breath. This new WRX had so much potential with very little effort from Subaru ... All they had to do was keep the VA styling and make it slightly more modern, tune the 2.4 to 300HP and throw in the slightly nicer interior. They could have dialed it in and not screwed it up, but it's like they put effort it to make it uglier.

If it'm going to have to blow my warranty on a WRX to tune it to 300HP+, may as well get a blower for a BRZ and have a beautiful car.

I completely agree but the imprezas have always been ugly. I guess it comes down to, do you need 4 doors and AWD. If not like you said the Twin is so much prettier.

Nope, not cross-shopping WRX at all. I don't consider AWD fun. And I'm not one to buy a car on looks, but damm, WRXs have been ugly jelly-bean looking lately. They looked better when you could get one as a hatch. I'm just looking for a rwd, fun to drive car, and will throw all-season tires on it and enjoy the dynamics on tight backroads.

Get a WRX in snow or on some loose dirt and it is the definition of fun.

To be fair, I can have fun in basically anything in snow or loose dirt.

Well except maybe a sport bike.

Get a BRZ in snow or on some loose dirt and you'll have even more fun.

Anyway, this is going as expected:

I posted some thoughts on our apexfiles insta here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CTwtbjAr..._web_copy_link

I do think the STI will be the "tarmac" version of this car but the WRX is really confusing to me. It's like they looked at all the people asking for a faster Crosstrek and all the people asking for a WRX wagon and said "You know what? I'm going to piss both of you off so badly."

That said, the mechanicals are exciting to me and I'll keep an open mind on the looks til I see it in person soon. If I recall, it has more ground clearance and more suspension travel with a lower COG which is actually awesome. We'll see about the CVT, but I'm open to it.

You need to drop the suspension and go stancewars to get up to even mediocre performance in the gravel?

wow.

No. Not even on the purchase radar.

Remember the Tribeca? Yeesh. That's still a brainworm.
