cars.com editor refuses to buy FR-S because of scion badge

http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...i-want-to.html

This probably has been mentioned before. Obviously Subaru has more heritage and maturity to its name. But I almost agree with him. I'm in my thirties now and I to almost feel embarrassed about driving a Scion. Even though I still love my car and the BRZ front end is ugly IMHO, I feel I would get a lot more respect simply by bearing the Plieades cluster. Oh well, I'm not going to trade in for a BRZ simply because of the name. BRZ owners be grateful you dont have this problem. I dont know where I'm going with this post. They should have made it a Toyota (in north america) I guess!?

Wut?

It's true what they say, you can't fix stupid.

EDIT: I'm 48 and have no problems driving a Scion.

I am with you. That is why I re-badged mine as Toyota. I know people on this forum don't care and will say 'so what...have pride in the fact it's a Scion'. There are people in Japan that are swapping out their Toyota badges for Scion badges.

I would have bought the BRZ limited if I didn't get an employee discount through my bro and a new grad discount from just graduating from grad school.

Swap badges to Toyota badges. They are OEM fit which is the the way they are supposed to on 86. It's not some goofy mod.

Eh it's a badge on a car. If buying a "Scion" bothers him that much, he should just buy it and rebadge it as a Lexus or better yet, Ferrari. Because it's the badge that matters, right?

Sorry, but the guy says he is pushing 40 and he worries about what someone else thinks of him because, wait for it, he drives a Scion?

If you love the car, buy the car. If it is that important for your self image that you worry about driving a car with a Scion badge then just rebadge the damn car to a Toyota...

I will say this. I always have thought Toyota should have sold the car as a Toyota. I still do. But not buying a car you really want to buy because of the badge on it is just immature and ignorant...

Scion is a zero prestige brand.

Obviously in the case of the BRZ/FRS we don't care on this forum but have to ask yourself what brand of car, phone, appliance, clothes would you never buy due to the brand or label? Same concept.

It's just basic consumerism to have a brand label bias.

I agree with you. But this is a car editor. This is someone who supposedly loves cars. If you found the car you loved and really wanted to buy it would you really let something as trivial as an emblem stop you? Especially since you can just put a Toyota badge on the car and call it a day?

This guy is not an 19 year old woman.. He is a late 30's car nut...

It's because it's a sub $30k sports car here that attracts a younger demographic. Toyota NA doesn't want that type of reputation here because the general consumer is so shallow and uneducated. The main thing people care about is brand name marketing here which I find very annoying. They think "oh it's Ford/GMC the definition of America!" when in reality a 2008 Civic manufactured in Cleveland is more "American". With that being said, you could always just debadge and have fun watching people break their necks trying to figure out what you drive.

This was 2011.

Still, Scion is a relatively youthful brand. In 2011, the average age of Scion buyers was 43 compared to an industry average of 51, according to TrueCar.

When Scion launched nationally in 2004, its average buyer was just 35.

Truth of the matter is, other then the TC and now FRS, the majority of the people I see driving Scions are older people (I'd say about 45 yrs old and up).

If you need to drive a certain brand of car to feel "grown" or mature then you really aren't all that mature to begin with.

Who really gives a fuck what the editor thinks or what other people think? If they wanna put you down for driving what brand you bought, then you just know they care waaaay too much about what people think.

I see it all the time with some (again, SOME) of the BRZ owners. They think they are better. Who gives a rat's ass?

Sure it's nonsense, but I get it.
I share some similar hang ups about cars.

Was going to get the new Fit until I found out they are being made in Mexico. Was considering a Fiesta ST but same story and I could not own a Ford. I think its easier to dismiss cars for reasons like this as you get older and have owned a ton of cars.

It's the attitude of "I could take it or leave it."

I hear you, having owned a 1999 VR6 Jetta that was produced in Mexico and officially lemon law'd I understand. Funny how the new Fit has been pushed back for release due to some QA issues in Mexico. Imagine that

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/05/23/2...uality-checks/

And, like I said, I do think the Scion badge has probably hurt sales of the FR-S in North America. Toyota was trying to use the platform to turn the Scion brand around. I personally think it was a mistake, and that Scion should just be killed off as a brand.

But I myself would have no issue buying an FR-S with a Scion badge on it because I know what the car is.

Cheap labor, low taxes, cost cutting, always will be consequences.
I love the guys swapping badges off the Scion. It's like seriously, you aint fooling no one.
