Questions about replacing Water Pump please
Hi guys, I'm at 111K on my 2013 10 Series and am strict about preventative maintenance. No issues with the car whatsoever but I'm doing some upgrades and maintenance soon and would like to do the water pump. The pump already has an o-ring style gasket on it. Do I still need to use high temp sealant on top of that? Some people say yes, some say no. Preferably am hoping to get feedback from members who have replaced water pump.
Thanks, Nickel

Typical response. I like to prevent things from breaking, not fix things that are broken.

I can appreciate your preventative maintenance desires, but sometimes we can get a bit "over preventative" - I remember waaay back in the day, my first car was a 1948 Chevrolet. I would visit the local junk yard and stock up on spare parts and carry them in the trunk, just in case of a breakdown on the road. Yep, things like an extra fuel pump, spark plugs, ignition points, ignition coil, carburetor, fan belt, plus a generous supply of duck tape and baling wire. NONE of those things ever went bad while on the road - it was always something else. Although your car has over 100,000 miles, a faulty water pump doesn't seem like a common problem with these cars. Therefore, I wouldn't worry about replacing the water pump. |

I've owned 5 NA Miatas and I'm so used to needing to replace those with the timing belt. I know this isn't that, but I figured since it was so accessible, why not? Is there nowhere in the manual stating this as like 100k service item or anything? I'm surprised if it's not honestly.

I haven't heard of the water pump being a weak link in the system so far.
It's usually leaky timing chain covers, main bearings or hopping rockers. You can take off the belt and check for a wonky bearing though. My 84 Civic S munched the valve train because the water pump froze up. It was driven by the timing belt, so, yeah. That was sometime in the early 90's though. I was five miles from home after driving it to S Cal. and back on a two week vacation. It was a good car none the less. Kept it til '95 and traded it in on a Grand Caravan.

I don't see anything in my FR-S manual about the replacing the water pump. I asked my buddy Bubba and he says that iffen it ain't leaken enough to leave a puddle of the floor, don't worry bout it. He referred me to this: https://www.yourmechanic.com/article...ing-water-pump Hells bells, the Model T Ford didn't even have a water pump and the water cooled the engine just fine. Where was I? .......... |

Water pump is not a preventive maintenance item. We talk about this once in a while.

Any moving part on the car might go bad at any time but most things like the water pump, pulleys, etc will last 100,000's of miles with out failing. (IMHO) |

I tried that with a clutch, and got 35,000km out of the new one which was faulty and shat a spring out of the disk which got sandwiched between the disk and flywheel, thankfully, and not the other way.
