front license plate

Its cool to not have the front license plate especially on a sports car like the BRZ. I know some friends thaf keep their front license plate on their dashboard. But is that legal in Texas? I don't want to get a ticket for a stupid reason like that

I don't know about Texas, but here in B.C. it is illegal and the police will pull you over for it... In an event of an accident or impact, your head could be decapitated by it if not mounted properly...

I call BS on getting decapitated by a licence plate. Not enough mass and/or speed - you'd have to get rear-ended by someone going pretty damn fast to even make the thing dangerous.

If you can link me a single real case of someone's head being cut off by a licence plate on the dashboard, I'll happily eat my hat.

An airbag could be a force that can really push that into your head if you were unlucky...

So unless your plates down there are made out of foam... It could definitely be a possibility.

Pretty sure a cop would give you a ticket if they saw that. Probably better off getting a tow hook kit so you don't have to drill the bumper. But then again, I don't run a front plate either in a state that requires one. I keep mine between the center console and passenger seat, next to my umbrella.

In Ohio you are required to have license plate "visible from the front of the car." *that's not exactly verbatim* The law however doesn't specifically say it must be attached to the bumper, and I have successfully gotten out of a ticket on this point with a plate being on the sun visor and easily viewed thru the windshield, but I was warned by the court official I was talking to that it is assumed that the plate will be on the front bumper and that I was basically playing in a gray area.

By Texas law you must have front plates.
The damn law always seems to go under review but never gets repealed.

I think primarily that drug suspect they used the premise to arrest is what they keep arguing for to keep the law. He was pulled over for having the front plate in the window and not on the front of the vehicle.

So yes you will keep getting harassed by state troopers over the front plates.
Or you can just pray you never get pulled over. As they say it isn't a matter of if just when a cop decides to pull you over for front plates.

If you were to devise a way to properly mount the plate on your dashboard at a great enough angle to be easily viewed from the outside while not interfering with your vision, you might get away with it. If I were you, I would try to test the limits before committing to planting the plate on the front fascia. Having said that, I absolutely despise front plates and luckily PA does not require them. So take it for what it's worth.

I live in ohio, we also have laws about the front plate, I do not have a front plate, I get a ~$90 ticket every ~1-3 years.. no points,...

there are also laws against sliding your car sideways through an intersection,.. that does not stop us.....

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it, Mythbusters did a test to see how dangerous things like a tissue box are in the event of an accident. I don't remember the exact findings, but I know they were surprised at just how deadly common items that are found in many cars actually are.

Just imaging you get into an accident, and with all the movement of the car before actual impact your license plate comes dislodged from the dash and ends up in front of you, now the airbag goes off. That could end up causing severe injury or death.

I'm in Austin, and I don't have a front plate. On my previous POS car, I got pulled over for it twice in 11 years resulting in 0 tickets.

They recently reworded the law on Texas front plates but somehow accidentally removed the line which had the penalty clause, so they can't really give you a fine. They will probably take the first opportunity to amend it in January, but this year was penalty free no plates.

That being said, I've already gotten pulled over in the BRZ to be warned about the front plate, and I think we will be harassed a little more than usual about it. The guy just wanted to check out the car :-P

Kinda sucks for me because my 5 year old managed to run off with my front plate before I got it mounted and I now have no idea where it is.

Another added bonus of why I don't keep anything inside my car. If I do, it's usually in the trunk.
