No they had their master tech give it a basic look over, he confirmed its the motor just going off that. They told me I can take his advice and options that they gave me previously and not pay anything. Or I can pay for the fee and they can do a proper look over to find the exact problem. But either way I need either an engine swap or a rebuild.

Theres a known Subaru performance shop a little bit under an hour from me, I called them, they told me they can rebuild mine for about 5k to rebuilt it though they would need to take it apart first to see everything that is needed which would cost about 2k alone, they can get me a used motor for about 4k and labor would be 2k. They actually have one in the shop that they are currently working on, that customer is at 6k so far.

This sucks, this was my first car, I bought it and made the payments without any financial support from my parents. I just paid it off not too long ago and now I have nothing to show for it. But it is what it is. I have a friend who just lost her uncle to Covid-19, so when I look at it like that, I don't have it all that bad. Thank you all for the advice and all who helped me when I first started this thread.

Sorry to hear about your friends uncle.

You can source engines for less than that. I've bought and sold them between 1500-2000. Labor at 2k is.. well maybe normal but seems high as it doesn't take even 10 hours to do the swap and that's at a $200 bill rate...

Hey Dave if you can find me a good engine for $2k I'm all ears. I have a 13 but since I need to replace it anyway I think I want a 15 or 16 motor. If you know of one for a MT car with the harness so I don't have to go scrounging for parts let me know.

Thanks!

Might take some patience but I bought the engine in my 13 (2015 engine with 42k on it) for 1,800 from a seller on craigslist and we've sold motors for $1,500. Junkyards do want 3-4k so keep an eye on FB MP and CL.

MP? I'm a CL moron and can't find any of these engines for sale anywhere. I haven't looked for anything on CL for years...

Did you run into any hassles putting the newer motor into your car?

Facebook Marketplace.

Not really, the 2015 harness plugs right in but the jackholes I bought the engine from cut the harness. I bought a conversion harness for the 2013 engine to use 2015 coilpacks from Subaru (they have a harness for 2013 cars and 2014 cars). That required me to move over two sensors from the bad 2013 engine to the 2015 engine.. IIRC it was water temp and oil temp but it's pretty obvious which need to be swapped when you have it in front of you.

We've done the reverse swap as well (2013 engine into a 2015) and just plugged it in and went.
