I used to work at a VW/Mazda dealership in high school in the early 80s and then a few years after that at an Alfa/SAAB dealership. The mileage is somewhat irrelevant...everyone in the shop would take EVERY new GTI, RX7, 900 Turbo, or 3 litre Milano out for a thorough whipping. The cars would come back smoldering from all the undercoating sizzling off, brakes stinking, and exhaust popping and pinging... I particularly remember when the first RX7 GSL-SE was delivered with the 'big' injected 13B...I would not have wanted to be the person who bought that car...

9 miles; 2 from my test drive, 1 from them filling it up with gas and washing it, 6 when I got in it for the test drive.

Mine had 28, but it wasn't used for demos. Might have been moved from another dealer lot; the other two BRZs on the lot at the time had exactly the same miles. The plant in Gunma is near Tokyo, so from there it goes by ship to Vancouver, Washington. There is a rail terminal there where Subaru cars from the Indiana plant come in. My BRZ came by ship and my Ascent by rail to this location and loaded onto trucks for the trip to Oregon City. My ascent had 4 miles on the odometer. In 2013, our local dealer saved us a four month wait on the 2014 Forester we wanted by swapping with a dealer in another city. That car had about 300 miles. That car is still going strong. What do you think about this: I saw a video of a BRZ review on YouTube. There seems to be more so-called reviewers and influencers than there were 86s and BRZs actually built. This guy takes a new BRZ off the lot with all the stickers on the windows and takes it for a ride. It is 30 degrees out on that day. A short distance from the dealer, he comes to a stop and does an acceleration test. WTF? I recall having to take it easy for the first 1,000 miles and I even set the tachometer to 4,000 RPM to warn me. I think the guy referred to his personal car as a domestic muscle car with 400+ HP, so he does not give a rip that the BRZ that he is abusing is going to be someone else's new car that they made a few sacrifices to buy. How about this for abuse of a vehicle before the first owner takes possession: my last RV was built in Forest City, Iowa about 2,000 miles away. It had to be driven to the dealer's location unless you pick it up at the factory. The distance is not the issue. After I got it home and got into the navigation system, I found a record of the entire trip. It was driven with an average speed of over 70 MPH with a top speed of 85 MPH. This was outside of what was recommended by Mercedes Benz for the Sprinter Diesel chassis. If your new car has more than single digits on the odometer, I don't think it unreasonable to ask the dealer how many people have been farting in seat cushions.

Mine had 6 when I test drove it. Fresh off the boat, so to speak.
That said, my GTI had 57 when I bought it. It's at 84k now and no issues out of the ordinary. I don't think mileage on initial purchase means much.

On the flip side, my '85 MR2 had almost 60 miles on it when I purchased it new. 40 of those miles I put on it when I test drove it! The salesman made the mistake of handing me the keys and telling me to enjoy. I'm pretty sure when I got back they were about to report the car as stolen.

I'm making a trip to London, Canada as I have a "weekend test drive with a Hakone" organised through the local Toyota dealer. It's a MT, very rare.. will report my findings next week...
