Actually they can occur in either the intake or the exhaust system (afterburn).

Now I have no clue where the ones in a tuned 86 happen as I have no interest in being that kind of an @$$hole

So how does the exhaust system amplify it? Because pop tunes have always been louder behind them...

Backfires are any combustion outside of the cylinder where they belong. Can be on intake or exhaust side.
The most common way to get tuned backfires is by pouring excessive fuel into the exhaust so you can actually hear it.

most pops and bang tunes are just ignition retard like the stock tune does on gear change, clutch pressing and sudden throttle change.... Not many touch the fueling

Also, stock cold start forces the ignition to -19 (-20 is the maximum limit hard coded into ecu, also the maximum timing which pops are put at)
And cold start also adds fuel (even if the ecu target a leaner 15.5, with the cold lot of fuel doesn't vaporize and burn) and since it also stratifies the injections, a lot of dumped fuel goes to the exhaust where it encounters the kat , pretty near the exh valves, I would say....since most of the reasons i've seen here from pops-haters is: it's not supposed to burn in the exhaust... but stock rom has plenty of moments where ignition is very retarded

I do not use them personally, but every guy I tune here in italy asks me for them , or for some type of insertable-with-a-button crackle at gear change.. and nothing wrong have happened yet

I can't even.

Backfires are when the combustion comes BACK into the intake manifold. 99% of the time this results in catastrophic failure.
An afterfire is when your dumb pops comes AFTER the combustion chamber, in the exhaust.

Anyone have experience or input?

Who uses cats these days lol jk jk
