dedpedal's 86 Beams トラックカー
Hey guys, my name is Anthony, I've had a long history of cars, a few SC300's, SC400's, a couple MKIII Supra's, (Grew up with Toyota, ventured into Nissan; S13 hatch, 370z, V36 G35 Sedan) I found myself keen on the idea of a FRS/BRZ/GT86 years after release, due to the fact of affordability. Since release their body styling has been appealing to me, and after watching them, learning them, working on them, driving them... I've saved up enough to buy one as a project. Shameless Instagram plug @dedpedal
Yes its a 2013, yes its a FR-S, but title says Toyota, and as a Toyota fan boy at heart, I refer it as my GT86. With that said, I'm ditching the Subaru FA20 motor and swapping in a Beams motor. The car is for the most part stock. it has BC racing coilovers, and the rest are just Toyota / GT86 badging with the face lift. I have a lot planned in this build, most of which I've been planning about 2 years ago before I even got the car. I do hope that I'm able to contribute to the platform, and justify the looks of this car in its performance as well. The purpose of this car? Grip and Drift fun, just like my Z, at less weight, and more power, with less cost! (maybe not the less cost...) As a teaser I'm looking to adapting a knuckle that's forged (I've noticed the OEM one is cast) and that is readily available with 5x114.3 hubs. So no need to worry about discontinued small manufacturer projects. Wheel bearings are a consumable! For now here are some pics from the day I got it. Purchased without wheels or tail lights, my best friend was generous enough to let me borrow his spare wheels and stock tails to drive it home until I get my own stuff for it. and for the fun of it, here are pics of my triple duty 370z Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:06 PM. |

Been assessing a lot of the current state, and what the previous owner did/did not do... no need to go into detail but...
From left to right: FR, FL, RR, RL (no wonder the p/o stated the coilovers feel terrible) As I rebuild the BC, I have some Revel (Tanabe) coilovers which ill be using to assess the cars weight and feel, springs are KW ~6kg for the front, and ~4kg rear. I set some preload on the rear, but the bump travel on these things are ridiculously short! Moved on from the suspension and into the cockpit First DIY mod I did was the reverse lock out bracket, I shorted the height just enough to shorten the pull up throw with my T&E Vertex shift knob Will be installing some parts that I collected over a year ago as well, doge approves PCI seat mounts and brackets Installed some cheap aero and wheels as a placeholder. Most of these items are for me to enjoy the car until the final phase. Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:05 PM. |

On the back side of things I also acquired a spare subframe. Anyone know what subframe bushings are in this? Its blue delrin with a steel sleeve insert. I thought Maybe its Cusco, but I cant find anything on it. the superior steps have been chipped off, so I might knock these out and get some SuperPro polys (personally don't want solid delrin/alloy)
The subframe had a little surface rust so I started grinding away- took off the rear AFS leveling bracket, and some of the excess welding splatter, proceeded with welded in the Part Shop Max diff risers Altezza pumpkin also arrived with 4.3 final gearing and a Cusco RS 1.5/2 way LSD, I'm happy to see the inside so clean, now to hope the clutch packs are fine. Started painting the subframe, I'm using the left over Steel-It cans I had when I did my 370z subframe.
Multitasked and cleaned off the muck from the engine bay Also got some finishing touches to my cockpit (prototype of the carbon shifter plate) Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:04 PM. |

Subframe bushings came in!
First encounter with Super Pro, they also make stuff for the 370z, but I haven't gotten anything from them at the time. Lifetime warranty WITH racing?? Ill take it! I'm actually please with their quality. A nice touch is the steel rings that mate with the edges of the subframe. this is good to prevent any slicing from heavy / sudden loads to the frame. Something I have yet to see from Energy Suspension. Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:04 PM. |

Picked up my street exhaust from my favorite shop, Speed Alliance in San Diego
Took it around to break in the exhaust and had to take an obligatory gas station photo Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:04 PM. |

Did some more suspension changes, and comparisons
Current setup seems to be the most promising... I haven't taken photos of the front but right now its 6kg front and 4kg rear on the KW springs This should feel very similar to the HKS coilovers Last edited by dedpedal; 06-14-2021 at 12:03 PM. |
