Road noise? Tread Noise?
is it me, or is the road noise pretty loud inside the cabin? it only happens when i drive, so im thinking, its the tires. and worst case would be an wheel bearing?
let me try to describe what i hear when i drive, i hear it even with the radio on. take a empty plastic coke bottle, and blow into the top of the mouth, it sounds exactly like that. a wind noise and a hollow drowning noise. |

Transmission whine, engine whirring, road noise, etc. The 86 is a noisy car by most standards, for the most part (barring the crickets I would imagine), it seems to me by design by virtue of possessing very little and heavy sound dead material.

By design the GT86/FR-S/BRZ have very little/any sound deadening material to keep wieght down. If your gonna have an aluminum hood and thinner sheet metal for the roof to reduce weight, you already have reduced sound deadening.
If you don't like the noise in the cabin, you can add sound deadening material to the interior wheel wells and trunk area. This'll cut down quite a bit of cabin noise at the expense of increased weight. |

I think it depends on the road to. I find that the cabin is quiet when driving on smooth raods obviously and it is very loud and bumpy on rough roads.

Depends on the road most of the times, and maybe even the tires you run on. I was running on some off brand tires, and boy did i head a lot of weird noises. You will get used to it, just bump up the music.

Agreed. I can tell a difference from my sisters Malibu to the FR-S. But it's an upgrade from my Saturn.
I think most of it comes from tires. I have droning tires, and I don't do burnouts or drift.

Its the sound of a "real" car. The transmission whine, the roar of the tires, the engine.... undisguised by modern sound deadening and numerous soft bushings and isolating mounts.

I think the stock tires get a drone, both me and my tech thought I had a wheel bearing on its way out, but they're all good.

There are shops online that sell these noise canceling material you place around your car, not too sure how well they perform. Beat sonic also sells a spray type that you spray in the wheel wells.

Light car = less sound deadening = more road noise.
