Reporting performance mods to insurance...

TOPIC

Have any of you done this? From what I understand you won't be covered for the parts you purchased (turbos, exhaust, etc) obviously. But got forbid someone gets hurt, are they able to just drop you since your "misrepresenting" your vehicle?

Have any of you had any experience one way or another, or do you go by the "don't ask don't tell policy"?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you're removing/replacing seats, airbags, seat belts etc.

I have the body panels I put on my Mustang covered on my insurance, just had to tell them what body parts I put on and they took pictures of the car. Didn't change my rates at all. They don't cover things like power adders and suspension since they're wear items, at least mine wouldn't.

I never told progressive about the mods I did to my Tacoma.

When my wife totaled it they gave me fair market value for every mod.

Short answer: varies by insurance company.

Long answer: if your policy doesn't cover modifications, you could lose out on coverage. AAA is this way.

I have notified my insurance company of the mods on my car, it didn't change the premium much but now I know they won't try to void it and they may cover some of the mods in the case of a loss.

Just read your policy, some insurance companies allow for aftermarket mods without even seeing the mods.

depends on your insurance, if you modify your vehicle and feel the mod is worth getting money back should you crash, let them know about it so they can add that to your policy. Otherwise, mod on but know that some insurance policies only cover up to stock parts.
