You want a 2002 and on. There major changes during the life of the c5 z06. I was looking at only 2004's the last model year they made them

I wouldn't consider anything "major." They changed the fuel system in 04 and that carried on to the C6. They did some suspension upgrades and revisions in 02 and again in 04. Gave HUD standard in 02+. Sodium filled valves in 02+.

If you were actually tracking a car you'd make a lot of changes anyways. I had the 2001 model because it was the cleanest, lowest mileage example I could find and I knew I was changing things a bit anyways. If you were keeping it bone stock than find an 04. Otherwise I would just look for the cleanest nicest example you could find of any year C5Z.

They did some cam stuff that supported the engine bump to 405hp. While agree, I am going to scrap the idea and move forward with the twin build. I have alot of the go fast parts already and when the motor let's go I will park it, save my money and get it fixed but it will go back to NA and become a dedicated track car. Stripped interior the whole nine yards

Like I said, nothing major. A cam swap in an ls car isn't very involved and you'd be swapping in a cam much larger anyways.

From a purely track view, it would take a significant amount of money to do what a C5Z can do in stock form. Good luck.

Very true. But for now i am just a casual weekend warrior. Who knows maybe as time change the c7's will become more affordable for me and I just jump straight there. Still not giving up on my dream to own a Corvette. Just now is not the right time

Kinda like 2013-14 and 2015-16 twin. Minor updates, but important for a track car.

I know some upgraded cooling is a must for track duty but having a reliable 400whp with a few mods that are smog legal and something I can drive to and from the track. This would not be a daily but a weekend/pleasure and track car.

Just looking for some thoughts on who has tracked this car. At 3100lbs and 400hp it really seems like an attractive package

long story short, the LS becomes very quickly unreliable if you throw sticky tires at the car, along with a fast driver.

If you're going to track it, I would consider a C7 GS over a C5Z because the LT doesn't have the issues the LS does. Additionally you don't have to deal with "old car problems".

Also, you won't be munching through brakes.

Is it the Vette experience you want, or the V8 experience?

Really both but in this case if I had to pick it's the V8. But I don't want a car that's a pig. Hence the C5 z06 at 3100 lbs was a nice weight vs most other V8 cars...

I have not tracked a C5Z but have driven them and C6Z at autox, and help pit and build at C6 "zr1" that is one of the faster time attack cars in North America. I would consider one for an upgrade to something on the next level of speed. But, my consumables budget says otherwise(315 tires/18x11 or 12 wheels, etc). You will burn up tires much quicker than you would on a 86(unless its got a bunch more power).

Plan to ditch the transverse springs, upgrade brakes, and control arm bushings sooner than later. Crank case pressure is another issue many face, so a good valve cover breater or dry sump would be a good addition on a track only car. Viking makes some great coilover kits for very reasonable pricing. The control arm bushings make a huge difference in feel.

I am not sure if the C5Z has the same shitty ABS of the C6, but I hate it a lot. We actually deleted ABS on the ZR1.

The C6 I work on is now iirc 26xx lbs. But, there is not much left of it.

I drove a C6 and for my preferences it's just too big. In many cases it comes down to if you like small and light or bigger but faster in a straight line.

That's a rough choice, because a lightweight V8 powered car doesn't really exist at a low-ish price point.

To put it in perspective, a C5 with equalized tires is about the same pace at Buttonwillow as a 86.

Obviously at power tracks the C5 is faster, and at twisty tracks, the C5 is slower.

It's got more power and torque, but it's definitely not a great handler, even for the weight.

Already decided to keep FRS. Will continue to use the super charger and continue to add the final bits (suspension and hood vents). When the motor goes it will be pulled from DD and I will go full track build an either go turbo or stay NA with flex fuel and tune.

Y not a v6?
Like a 350/370z
Those VQs can reliably make some crazy power.
FBO VQ37s on E85 are getting 330+ to the wheels, 4.1L stroker and cams getting 400+whp. And FI on stock blocks 500+whp all day.
Get the “V8” power with the sporty coupe package/experience. at a reasonable price point with huge aftermarket support.
