Oil buring in brz

Hey Everyone so I have a 2013 Brz with about 17500 miles on it and I go to about 3 track events each year and a few autocross events. In the past I've never had any issues but on my last event I had to add almost two quarts of oil. I was driving the car with my brother over a two day event but should I be worried? I've never had to add that much oil to the car. I do also have an oil cooler and the crawford air oil separator. I push the car very hard as well but my brother does not.

Some oil usage is not unusual but even pushing the engine hard. almost 2 quarts of oil is seems like a lot. If you aren't leaking or burning it, which would be visible as an obvious leak or bluish puffs out the tailpipe, then I'd think the place to look for the missing oil would be the air/oil separator - maybe it's not returning the oil back to the block?

Thanks for the reply. I mean the separator looks like its hooked up right and I don't see any leakage. It was hooked up by a local race shop. There is no way it could hold two quarts as well. I guess ill just keep an eye on the oil level and see if it continues to burn oil. I'm just worried I'm pushing the car to hard.

Also would it be possible that the oil just got by the separator and was burned that way? There is a lot of black residue on the exhaust, but i guess that could be normal

Either something is very wrong or you've made a mistake. There are a lot of details that could make this story make sense. My very first thought is how did you check the oil when you determined you needed 2 qts? Level surface? Hot or cold? Time from shutting the engine off?

A boxer engine has oil sitting in the heads, it can take 15+ minutes for it to drain to the pan where the dipstick is accurate, if you didn't wait you could have overfilled.

How many miles were on that oil when you needed to add 2 Qts? Did you do the fill initially? Subaru has claimed that burning up to 1Qt over an oil change is acceptable to them, it's rare to see that on the FA20 at this point but would not be hugely abnormal for Subaru or boxers of days old. If the oil was filled 'low' (just above the first mark, my preferred fill level) and burned maybe 1/2 Qt over 6,000 miles then it would make perfect sense that you needed to add 2 Qts if you want the oil to read on the top line.

Toss in the variables of your modifications which can add to the amount of variance in oil levels and I could easily see a 2Qt. swing as being reasonable.

Really the only thing you can do is keep an eye on your levels, there's a couple things you can do to check for damage (oil analysis, compression test) but imo without more details I wouldn't jump to any conclusions.

Alright I guess the most important thing is that i just keep an eye on the oil level now and see if I continue to burn oil.
