Tire Destroyed

Not an FR-S specific question, but anyone ever seen a tire destroyed this way before?

I can see the nail puncture on the outer part of the tread (see pic), but was surprised to see the inside sidewall ripped like that in a complete circle. The tear on the sidewall went completely through it causing instant loss of pressure. Bit unnerving at 75 mph.

Thats my guess too. The puncture caused the loss of pressure, the sidewall was over stressed from driving flat/low, (which is less noticeable than you think) and a sudden loss of control feeling was likely when the sidewall finally shit the bed.

Does this car not have TPMS or was it disabled or something?

I had a similar thing happen while driving my old corolla once. I was driving home from a cabin out in the mountains and one of my rear tires was nearly flat. I drove around for almost an hour before I reached a gas station and realized it was like that. I re-inflated the tire and it seemed to be holding air okay even though I could see the sidewall was pretty torn up. It was pretty late and I had to work the next morning, so I just went "Well... I gotta get home ASAP... I'll just take it easy" and kept driving, thinking I'd have it replaced the next day. About 20 minutes later the sidewall tore open (looked very similar to OPs pic) and I was stuck on the side of the road for 2 hours until triple A came. Obviously in retrospect, I should have swapped the donut on at the gas station instead of re-inflating the fucked up tire. Instead, I ended up having to wait on the tiny shoulder of a mountain highway for almost 3 hours for Triple A to come because my gf didn't want me changing a tire in the dark with trucks flying by at 75-80mph every 10 seconds.

I did that to a tire. It was on my first set of 35 series tires. 215/35/18's have a tiny sidewall, I did't notice one was flat. I was a teenager and didn't have the same "pre-flight" rituals as I do now. Anyway, the tire separated from the sidewall completely at about 60mph. It looked almost like the photo above. I had taken the spare tire out (Stupid, I know) to install a larger subwoofer, so I slept in my car till it was daylight and I could call someone. Lesson learned.

Hmm interesting. The car had TPMS active. The light went on while I was on the highway and I drove roughly 1 mile on it before I could pull off the nearest exit. I guess enough air had leaked out from the nail puncture to cause the sidewall to tear before I could exit the freeway. Good to know guys, thanks for the input!

TPMS don't detect instant changes.
This is the textbook definition of a run flat failure.
Sucks. It would be nice to have individual tire pressures displayed in real time though.
