BLTs like this make the hassle of growing a few tomatoes worth it.

this was a horrible year for tomatos.

normally, i'm literally inundated with tomato's from my neighbors, parents, and other acquaintances that won't even talk to me about anything else..

this year, my neighbor gave me a handful, and i think he regretted it later!

It was pretty tough here. We had a really late unexpected freeze (killed all my basil), then record breaking heat for 3 months. Blooms would just burn off. I'm getting tomatoes now, but may not have enough warm left for them to turn red.

The above reads like good opening to a very long novel.. something about loving neighbours, lost battles, war over different continents and the dreaded unripe tomato. In the background a long running thread for the desperate BLT!

the next batch of tomato's, he would soon learn, would be his last.

i started the crux of my plan in early february, ordering some standard roma tomato seeds. on the walk home from work, i swung by harry's hardware store for some antifreeze. harry is always a talkative fellow, a little too talkative for my plan. he'd remember this purchase, as i rarely drove the old buick anyways with work being so close. i riled up the local kids with some ice cream and quickly set them off to loudly argue who could build the better roller skate scooter in front of the hardware store. as one would expect, the sound of the hammers and disappearing wooden crates from behind the store drew enough of a racket to bring out ol' harry to see what all of the fuss was about. so very cautiously, while he was distracted over lecturing the value of a quality 16penny nail with a 9 year old, i quickly made my purchase of the nearest antifreeze container with his ever so sweet but hopelessly clueless wife, irene. irene being herself, she quickly wrote me up for step 2 of my grand scheme.

everything was going wonderfully to plan until she asked me if i'd seen her glasses, clearly perched atop her head. this was not the level of interaction i desired right now. but a line was forming, and i quickly decided to be discrete, much more to my benefit than hers, however the situation permitted it. i whispered "they're on your head!", to which she turned a nice shade of red. almost roma tomato red in a matter of coincidence.

i quickly left as the snickers were heard in the line at the register. harry, still distracted with the youngsters rollerskate scooters, and having turned the lecture over to discuss the merits of the best axle grease to use for optimum speed and longevity, never even noticed as i slipped past him to the sidewalk and made my way home to begin part 3 of my plan in a cordoned off area within my garden.

you see, these were going to be some special neighbor tomato's. i'm sure a few would be lost to the squirrels as well, but that'd be for the better anyways. as i walked, i thought to myself, maybe i should let old miss mabel up the street know to avoid making her famous squirrel stew for this year...

Excellent! A good start, you have me hooked. I know of an architect, through my work, his side hustle is writing. It seems like it's taking up most of his free time..

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a BLT!

I partially made this recipe yesterday: https://www.ethanchlebowski.com/cook...d-short-ribs-1

The shortribs are in the fridge and the used-veggies were strained from the cooking liquid, which is also in its own container to be simmered into a sauce.

For the side, I'm skipping the polenta and going to make roughed-up roast potatoes.

This will be dinner tomorrow.

Never made shortribs before so curious how it'll turn out.
