well yeah, they're dead simple MECHANICAL devices. it's really all the newfangled electronic stuff that mucks up the works.

of course, they burn almost as dirty as a international shipping vessel, but, yay! reliable!

today i learned i'm old.

checking out of walmart today with a guy in his early 20's with some bluray discs. the register asked him if i wanted to "add play protection to the cd's". he said he had no idea what cd's are. at first i thought he was joking...

This is true if it’s the older flat head style engine. The newer single cylinder OHV Intek engines will disintegrate if you look at them cross-eyed.

You must also be old. As am I, as I've never heard of it. My guess is it's insurance if the disk gets damaged by the player. Everyone wants to sell insurance now. Best scam ever.

That's basically it, its an extended warranty for CD/DVD/Game Disks. They will replace the disk if it becomes unreadable during the warranty period. I personally have NEVER had a CD/DVD/Etc get to the point where it was unreadable, so yea, sign me up for that.

This is basically where Best Buy makes most of their profit.

It was three polish mathematicians named Marian Rejewski together with Henryk Zygalski and Jerzy Rozycki who broke the enigma code in 1933. As WW2 broke out and the germans enhanced enigma, it was the pioneering and continuing work of these men that gave Turing the basis of and a head start to his own work.

I learned this one in 1997-99 when my Mom was stricken with liver and lung cancer (they don't know which way it spread, lung to liver or liver to lung). I grieved before she passed, then it started all over again when she passed away.

When my Father passed away 2 years later suddenly, I realized just how much I had grieved my Mother before her passing, versus just after with my Father.

Hard to believe it's been that long ago.

The sun never sets on the british empire. This was true in 1913 when Britain controlled 24 percent of the worlds land mass. Guess what. IT IS STILL TRUE TODAY.
For 24 hours a day, sun is shining somewhere on british territory. But for 1 hour out of those 24, it is a tiny, famous island in the South Pacific. Pitcairn Island. Yes, that Pitcairn Island.
While the story behind Pitcairn Island is interesting, the story after the story is even more so. HMS Pandora and her infamous box is just as harrowing a tale.

Been getting stuff about Pitcairn for about a week now on YT.

This story in one of the comment sections made me smile.

Steve Webber

I was aboard the Queen Victoria when she docked off the island in 2017. It was an extremely busy day for the islanders as the supply ship has also just docked.
All the islanders came out in their long boat, leaving only 1 elderly man ashore and came aboard for several hours.
They set up a lively market in the Queens ballroom selling their home made products, trinkets, souvenirs and home made produce such as honey and jams. It was amazing being able to meet them. Such friendly people.
Finally the QV's captain asked them what they would like in return for providing his passengers with such an unforgettable experience.
The next thing I remember seeing was hundreds and hundreds of toilet rolls being loaded into their long boat!
Such simple things we all take for granted but which the islanders deemed essential. The cruise ship then circumnavigated the island before setting sail for Tonga. An unforgettable day indeed.
