Sounds higher pitched than a ZC6 to me, more I4 than Boxer4.

Lower revs sound the same, but the upper sounds higher pitched.

Its actually a very wierd combo to me...

We all know the boxer has a distinct rumble.
The FA20 has a more smoothened growl compared to other subaru boxers because of the more equal length headers used.

This FA24 has the same grumbly hint-of-boxer sound in the low revs but as it revs higher it gets higher pitched compared to the FA20...but it still retains some of the growliness of the boxer, but smoothened out even more, but not quite reaching typical i4 smoothness.

So to me the sound starts off same as an FA20, but then as it revs higher it sounds somewhere in between an FA20 and an i4, but higher pitched than an FA20.

Yep that echoes my thoughts pretty much exactly.

I see what you mean... but sounds the same to me pretty much.

Just play those parts over a couple of times, they are pretty identical in the high revs. Makes sense at such high revs. Also makes sense that at around idle, the FA24 is a tad bit deeper in tone and a little more rumbly maybe even.

I definitely hear a higher and clearer high tone on the 2022

Hear that as well, but of course recording conditions and equipment vary. But on the basis of the limited evidence the new car sounds a touch more exotic and definitely less industrial, can't wait to hear what it sounds like in cabin IRL.

Also, for the first gens there's a small difference in the header design between zenki and kouki models.

I feel like the 2017+'s almost have a bit more obvious rumble in the low rpm's.

1st gen sounds better at lower RPMs.
Both 1st and 2nd sound similar at high RPMs.
2nd gen has this odd kind of whirring sound that doesn't sound natural.

Neither wins because they both sound like a leaf blower.

Yeah this. I was about to reply with exactly the same comment.

Similar sound, similar loudness, but noticeably cleaner and _slightly_ higher pitched sound.

Hopefully that bodes well for aftermarket exhausts.

Yea I’m very curious to hear it with a mild cat-back.

To my (admittedly aging and deteriorating) ears, the new car sounds 'better' (purely subjective, personal opinion). Less agricultural, a bit more guttural, more befitting of a 'sports car'.

But then, I don't think the current car (at least my 2019) sounds that bad. It's not the tearing shriek of a S2000 at redline, but it certainly doesn't deserve the criticism many people seem to heap on it. When I'm just driving, playing around with the windows down, it sounds fine to me (maybe not 'great', but just fine and certainly enjoyable to listen to).

Would be nice to hear the exhaust when there s a load on the engine. Revving in neutral doesn't do it for me.

Hmmm, maybe... but my thoughts were that the "higher" tone (which still doesn't really sound higher to me) was just a difference in equipment being used as one mentioned. You can hear that the two cars sound slightly different - but to me they don't sound different by tone, but rather in the quality of equipment being used.

Either way it sounds good to me, so I'm satisfied.
