I've been eyeing the first year GR86, especially since I could get a nice employee discount and low interest rate, but I'm hopeful they will release limited/special editions in the future. Of course if the car is a flop the first year (at least in sales) there might not be a special edition. But that's a risk I'm going to take. I'm not too concerned with "first year" issues though. As most people in this thread have mentioned, its not an entirely new vehicle. Most things are recycled from the previous gen and I think if you bought a first year car you'd be fine.

Those with issues are also a very small, vocal minority of persons that have the valve work done at their Toyota dealership. There were BRZs that had similar failures.
I could be very wrong in my initial statement. My evidence was just from speaking with service managers at Toyota dealerships. All of them, when asked about this, have mentioned that initially they had trouble getting the right training for techs.

That could be the case on the training, and it was required as part of the recall that the dealership have a tech trained specifically on the work.

Actually didnt toyota japan had to send a bulletin out, globally, to remind service mechanics on the correct lubrication of certain engine parts?

Toyota might sell more cars, but they also have more dealerships. The mechanic to car ration is probably very similar.

I mean if I was going to trust anyone over anyone else, it would be engineers who work solely on boxer engines. FA EJ, Turbo, NA, I don't care - any boxer engine is far more different compared to an inline, than say the difference between boxers engines, even those with design changes.

I agree, especially since boxers are pretty much the only configuration that needs a split crankcase and therefore need sealant to seal across all that where the front cover goes on the engine. You can’t do that with gaskets.

May I recommend that Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus.

You'll be so comfortable and satisfied you wont remember to press the stopwatch until your almost home. clearly making it a much quicker trip.

I'll be skipping the '22 and getting the '23 because I'd like to see if there are any problems within a year. And also the number 23 is something close to my heart. lol

Keep in mind it's not a completely new car. My 2013 didn't really have any issues and that was at the start. However, given how Toyota added more power with the Supra in the second year, you may get lucky and get something that is deemed a necessity that we miss out on. For me, I threw down for the BRZ and I'm already second-guessing if I want to throw down on the GR86. I like the look more of the GR86.

Well the Supra analogy is different. All they did was swap the B58B30O1 (non euro emissions) in instead of the B58B30M1 (euro compliant, has headifold). Non US cars still make 335 instead of 382.

I don’t imagine there would be any big difference atleast power train wise. They can’t change displacement or make the compression ratio higher. So I don’t see the power changing at all.
