Tall Driver Request
Hi Everyone,
Got a request. My brother is interested in an twin but he's a big guy; 6'4 260lb. He has trouble in most cars listed 39.0" or less of headroom and even then it is hit or miss. He does not fit in a twin bare headed and definitely no go with a helmet on. He's open to an aftermarket seat (thinking EVO XL or Profi XL?) to the floor, if possible. Years ago I rented a BRZ race car with Recaro Pole Position on sliders - I fit fine (6'1 200 lbs) and had a couple of inches above me. I think he could do it... Any tips/tricks/hacks for getting more headroom out of the twins? The request is two fold; 1) Was wondering if folks could recommend specific shop(s) that do aftermarket seats for the twins in the greater Long Beach/Downtown LA area. 2) If, after quarantine is lifted, anyone has had success in a seat/rail combo in their own car and are located in the greater Long Beach area that wouldn't mind his big ass trying it out. Coffee on me! I've suggested he buy one, take it to a professional upholster and get a foamectomy and headline modification done. Figure that could be good for up to 2.5" which could hit to proverbial 39" mark. Is that reasonable? Unsure what's left to gain out of the stock equipment. Thanks in advance. Stay safe and healthy out there! -C |

From memory back in my MR2 days. The best solution was side mounted rails. What ever seat company that makes side mounted rails/seats that's your solution. As to which, google can help.
I'm busy hunting down toilet paper

taking out the headliner is really easy. If you don't want the bare roof look you can go get a carbon roof. With the headliner my hair was in it, now I have a couple extra inches and can even sit like a blind grandmother without hitting the roof.

Mine is all mashed up in key spots. I've considered it but I worry about gouging up my noggin.

I would consider this if it isn't too much work and looks reasonable. Are you able to take pictures of it that are good enough to see what it actually looks like in person?

His inseam gives us an idea of his torso. Aspect ratio, if you will.

Oh, I see. Thank you.
But then this begs the question: Could one remove the headliner and compress it where one's head is to gain more room? If so, how would that look and how much room would it get you?

Sunroofs are the killers - the max height may have the measurement state x,y,z but its the trim around the window that protrudes and hits the noggin. ¿Nani? Quote:

I don't think we'd replace it with anything. Going bare metal sucks but if there is an inch or two to give, it'd be worth it. Frankly he'd need just that 1'x1' square cut on each side to the metal and glue a strip of fabric to it to make the spot blend in - the rest can stay in place. Ghetto but better than a full strip show. Unsure how much OEM padding there is and if it would be worth while (1"+) or we're chasing 3/16 of an inch in material thickness... Can anyone confirm? Would be best if he could sit in a stripped car with [side mounted] racing buckets. The 'end all' for headroom, so to speak. That would settle if there is a doable destination and we can cut/modify/change out until he finds a suitable compromise along the way. Cheers to everyone so far, have a great weekend. |

Shit, he is all torso. I honestly think that I'm at the very edge of reasonable. I'm 6'5" with 37" legs. I'm really curious about his fit.
