Puck vs Organic clutches
Background 14 FRS MT, stock engine, HKS SC. HKS 92 tune.
Stock clutch assembly failed due to TB, not the clutch. Was at 84k when stock TB failed, clutch still had some grooves in it. I had a supercharger planned, so went with a something with more clamping force. Replaced with a SouthBend Stage 2 350 ft-lb ceramic/metallic puck style clutch, my first. It's an Exedy product, all parts were labelled as such. This clutch how now failed at 131k, for slipping, no issues with the Exedy TB. About 47k on clutch and I've already killed it. I did add the SC in the 86k mile range shortly after for reference. And I beat on this car in the regards I go through a set of summer tires annually. Is this normal from a ceramic/metallic clutch system? My first and wondering why it failed so soon or if it's normal. I had a lot of parking lot speed chatter/judder. Is this the metallic clutch or just the ~2x clamping pressure just pumping more torque into the bushing system? Namely, the rear diff bushings. I have a Cusco bar and some Whiteline bits in there and it's still an issue since installation. I did the window sealant trick with them as well. Lasted about a month. Now I have JDM STI bushings in hand ready to replace. then the clutch started going. The Cusco bar helped a lot, but still a wheel hopper on hard launches and judders way too much in reverse and 1st at that those slow engagement speeds. Like my wife says, this car doesn't like to go slow. Probably move back to the organic in the same range of holding power after looking at the HKS offerings and their holding power, which maths out to 383 ft-lbs on the 86 platform. I'll see what the shop says. They're recommending ACT. I saw them poo poo'd at the time of the first replacement, think I'm going with the shop recommendation next. We'll see what the torque is. I still want a flex fuel kit on top of the SC regardless of my mileage. Blew engine last year, put a 55k replacement in, still good on that angle for low miles. Okay, I talk too much, but I want to share my position on the learning curve. |

Moved back to an organic ACT clutch. Way different engagement on the pedal, no more high torque impulse inputs and back to normal. Lesson learned. If I ever go dedicated track car I'll put one in, but otherwise, no more.
These things groove out the flywheel too. No heat damage at all, but way more material chewed away than an organic clutch exchange. Metal puck groove in flywheel was 1/16" or more deep. Maybe could be reworked and get lighter, I just recycled it. When organics get beat on, they leave burn marks and polish the surface. When a metal clutch gets beat on, it creates even more bite. Has to be a heat related issue for racing, and the coefficient of friction delta. An organic starts to go, you don't have much time left. With this metal clutch, I still drove to work for over two months keeping it limping due to waiting on parts. 40 mile overall daily commute. Drove like a grandma instead of speedracer, but it lasted way longer than expected that way. It was close though, another week I'd have been renting a car. |
