So... a while back we had a nice water feature added at our stairway... yeah, leaky toilet. Stopped using it for a good while to let things dry out and finally getting around to trying to fix it.
Pulled the toilet to find it had been installed horribly wrong; plumbers putty all over where it should just be a wax ring. No shims under the flange (which is at a bit of an angle and a half inch above the subfloor), completely rotted subfloor since all the leaking just pooled rather than leaking out onto the floor so I'd notice it, and a cracked flange to boot... oof. So, tear up the tile floor and replace (which would have required removal of the vanity as well) or try to repair from below? Ceiling was already toast due to water damage, so I decided to give that a go - may actually have been the better direction in the end. Smaller patch area than I'd have done if everything above had been pulled, but this should be fine. Hopefully...

All the muscles in my rib-cage ache from working overhead to get this done. I'm perhaps paying too much for plumbers to fix the flange and reinstall - hoping they decide to just chop and replace rather than trying to install some flange repair stuff (which is really just more places to leak down the road) so leaving the ceiling open till they're done.

Got an old lab table for a garage workbench today. Concrete asbestos! Thing is heavy.

Seal the whole top including underneath with a heavy duty urethane or epoxy finish. Maintain that finish. Do not let any part that is damaged be exposed at any time. It takes surprisingly little asbestos to get into your lungs to kill you in 30 years or so.

It’s still got a decent deal, the picture shows dust on it and a bit of oil. Will be going the epoxy route.

Didn't have the money for that fancy stuff. Gasoline, diesel or just plain old varsol were all the budget allowed.

Mechanical engineers commanded a decent salary back in my dad's day. We weren't rich but we were ok enough that my mom didn't have to work. 'twas a relatively secure childhood.

The carbon tet came from my dad's work. He always scored good stuff the lab didn't need. You know how that goes.
