Does anyone the difference between these two part numbers? Has anyone heard why one is being dropped? And finally can anyone confirm Draco's dealers claim?

Btw, Subarugenuineparts.com has the 160's on for $5.75 each, or $38.88 for 6.

The 160s are a taller, but narrower filter. Compare a Purolator L14459 to a L14610 to see the difference.

I was at the dealer today, they also told me that the 160 has superseded the 130. I asked for a copy of the TSB, I was allowed to read it, but not copy it. There was only two mildly interesting pieces of info on it. First, exactly what Draco described, the filter dimensions are slightly different. Second, the 130 will not be superseded on two model years of the Forester but will be on everything else using a F series engine. Now, my question is, what's different about the Forester that the old filter has to be continued on those?

The more I think about this, the more I think I want to go with an aftermarket filter setup. I know someone has said that the Subaru filter has a higher bypass pressure. But that's just causing a higher differential pressure across the filter. Thus allowing the oil pressure to drop lower as the filter gets older, instead of using a filter that doesn't need that high of a differential to last through the service interval that the bean counters specified.
