^^ unless the part that fails causes the damage.
Oil filter fails, Causes mains to fail.
Subaru or Toyota will turn down your claim. And point you to the direction of the oil filter company. Sub/Toy part did not fail, The root of the failure is the oil filter. The damage is the main engine bearings.

The rings in the motor fails. Then they do not care about a non oem oil filter. Anything oil related fails, They will point at the oil filter and turn your claim down.

How exactly does an oil filter fail? Thats a pretty far-fetched instance.

The check valve inside fails, Or is set to the wrong release pressure.

It happens more then you think. Google Fram and oil filter failure.

I have a fram fail. Took out a motor of mine. Went back to shop about it. Was told "yup sorry" they just asked us to pull those quietly. Here is their claim number.
Never heard a word...

dbl post: You dont have to be a **** bag just because I just shut you down earlier. Show me a REAL oil filter that has failed.

If you run a fram 'filter' you deserve to blow up engines.

You asked for it and you got it. You did not shut me down one bit. You had me at Hello sexy. lol j/k

Fram is still an oil filter. search around and you will find more brands.

We think this FTC rule is pretty clear and unambiguous. Please note that the FTC requires the “warrantor” (this would, generally, be your motor vehicle manufacturer) to “demonstrate” that the defect in or damage to your vehicle was caused by your installation or use of a K&N air or oil filter, or other “unauthorized” part, before a warranty claim can be denied. We contend that this requires credible proof as to the cause of a failure and not merely your dealer’s guess, speculation or unfounded opinion as to the cause.
Like I said. Above straight from K&N which you cut n pasted. Factory will send a rep out. If it is oil related, They will point at the oil filter. Claims of pressure drops and so on. And if a FA motor fails. You better bet they are going to send a factory rep out to inspect it.

Don't blame me. I'm passing along real life events. Like I said. I am unsure why everyone hates on the OEM oil filter. I use them on my 550+whp 20k Cosworth motor. I am sure a FA motor will have no problems using the same filter. Its also not worth going into how the oil filter works with the oil pump. You will all figure it out in the long run.
There are people that have, And there is people that will. Only you can pick which side you are going to be on.

Ill just quote myself here and leave it be. Im not sure you were replying to me since I have never cited any sources aside from the FTC, Id certainly never take anything said by K&N as fact.

Once again. Please use your own words and place your links to back yourself.

Side note. Why does everyone have a hard on for not using OEM oil filter. The engine oil system was designed to use it. If Subaru could make a cheaper filter that did the same job do you think they would do it? Of course they would. That is more money in their pocket.

First you say that you used to "teach" the Magnuson-Moss act, then you accuse it of being oil company puffery, which is it?

I don't think anybody said anything bad about the OEM Tokyo Roki filters, just the mediocre Subaru ones.

Subaru already did get the cheapest filter they could that's where the whole discussion began (cost-cutting to increase gross margins will always come into play, as businesses exist to make money).

If an oil filter is the direct cause for catastrophic engine failure and that can be proven, then obviously it's a legitimate claim to deny a warranty. However, you'd be surprised at how many incidents that you would think would invalidate warranty claims actually don't in the real world.

Bottom line is, don't buy FRAM, stick to OEM or one of the more proven aftermarket brands.

For what its worth,

nasioc's conclusion over the years is that on our EJs, OEM subaru oil filters are best for our engines.

Not sure if this crosses over into the world of the FA20, but its still a boxer motor.

Personally, I'm glad I'm getting mine at the end of the year, I'm sure by then someone who frequents bob the oil guy will have figured something out

FWIW, buy from Subaru and not Toyota. At least in Norcal Toyota dealers don't seem to have them in stock, and also said list price was $22! I picked up 2 from Subaru for $8 each.

Note: The BRZ can use either the 15208AA130 filter or the 15208AA160 filter from Subaru, both are made by Tokyo Roki and use the same pressure bypass. The difference is their overall size (The 130 is a little larger than the 160).

How do you find out the pressure or check valves for other filters?

I planned on using Royal Purples oil and filter. Now I'm questioning it. Their filters are usually indestructible, and I thought used much higher pressure. Google isn't helping today :/

Oil filters + crush gasket at $6.44 per. The 12 pack only breaks down to 6.03 per.
