The turbo motors are still EJ255's, so they still use the old filter size.

I don't think I'd say that Tokyo Roki > Mobil 1. They're comparable in terms of build quality, it's just that the OEM filter is better suited to this particular application.

And while I was digging around, I found this. It's an FB25 with a K&N HP1004 (equivalent to an M104).

That said, you're probably better off sticking to the OEM filter once you use up your stash of M1's. Tokyo Roki makes high quality filters and Subaru specifies a stupidly high bypass valve pressure, meaning that aftermarket filters will be allowing a lot more oil to bypass the filter element than Subaru recommends. The Tokyo Roki OEM filters are valved to Subaru specs, are very solidly built and they're only ~$6.50.
Where are you buying them from? PM me please

I just got off the phone with Purolator. The stock Subaru filter crosses to a L14459 or PL14459. These have a 12-18lb bypass which might not be high enough unless the Purolator has about twice the media surface area. I think I might switch to these regardless as I've heard a lot of bad things about the new Subaru blue filters.

Sweet! That means the same filters I use on the CL will work on the FR-S.

But it's the Tokyo Roki black filter.

This may not apply to really anyone here. But on the subaru's some have to run the smaller filter as their turbo set ups get in the way. Like mine. I run the FullRace twinscroll and I have to run the smaller filters.

He's still covered. Warranties cannot be voided for maintenance items that aren't OEM unless the dealer/car marker provides them to customers for free. That's why you can use any oil that you want or any filter that you want.

Care to back your claim with facts? And a link?

I can tell you right now if you have a oil related engine failure. And it doesn't have a oem oil filter. The factory rep is going to tell you to piss off.

Do some research on the Magnuson-Moss act.

You asked for a link, so here's the fastest thing I could pull up in Google:

I used to teach the mag-moss act, I have also had have been around the block with a failed oil filter.

Once again. Please use your own words and place your links to back yourself.

Side note. Why does everyone have a hard on for not using OEM oil filter. The engine oil system was designed to use it. If Subaru could make a cheaper filter that did the same job do you think they would do it? Of course they would. That is more money in their pocket.

the magnuson-moss act isnt an internet thing, its a real US Federal Law.

I will direct quote from the Magnuson-Moss Act:

"Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty. This is commonly referred to as the "tie-in sales" provisions, and is frequently mentioned in the context of third-party computer parts, such as memory and hard drives."

Full-text for those that choose to educate themselves prior to buying a new or certified-pre-owned car:
