If your going to use a torque wrench on small bolts use a 1/4 or hand torque but hand near the head of the ratchet.

Learnt the hard way too using torque wrenches sometimes its not worth using them.
The problem is that he used 1/2 inch torque wrench, which is very imprecise at around 30 ft lbs. 1/4 inch tw is also useless here. What is needed is 3/8 inch torque wrench. OP has insufficient experience with tools. Not the tools fault. I actually don't bother with tw for this. Just use a regular 3/8 wrench, which is pretty short, and give it a hard turn. That's all.

The other reason not to use a torque wrench is its got oil on the thread so your going to over torque the bolt.

Plus its not a critical bolt ie. head bolt.

Just to circle back and close the thread on this:

I removed the (non-OEM) drain plug and drained my oil. Upon inspection, it looks like the excessive force I put on the bolt by using my 1/2" drive made the drain plug cave in on itself.

I installed the fumoto valve according to the instructions and the leak seems to have stopped...hopefully forever. I was/am however worried I cross-threaded the threads but I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks all for the input. Hopefully others can learn from my mistake!

If it went in smoothly and easily until the gasket touched, you're fine!

Yep, OP, get yourself a 3/8" drive socket set with one of those short 5-6" ratchets. You will bust up a lot less stuff.

Put the 1/2" drive socket set down in the compartment of your tool box with the blow torch, BFH and crowbar.
